The volume devoted to an eminent expert on the history of Hungary,
but first of all a remarkable man,
Jan Wacław
Felczak
(1916-1993)
is the
outcome of the scientific meeting organised by the Polish Academy of Arts
and Sciences on
13
June
2003,
on the
10*
anniversary of this outstanding
scholar s death. The volume begins with a foreword by Secretary-General
of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences
Jerzy Wyrozumski
and contains
texts written by Professor Felczak s students, colleagues and friends.
Jan Pezda describes
Wacław
Felczak s youthful years. He sketches
a picture of the years that the youngest of eight children of the Felczaks
spent in his family house in Golbice near
Łęczyca,
in the atmosphere of
cherished tradition and deep patriotism inherited from his descendants
exiled to Siberia because of their participation in the November and January
Uprisings. He also shows
Wacław
Felczak s school years in
Stanisław
Kostka
Gymnasium (Intermediate School) for Boys attached to the Diocesan
Seminary in
Płock,
and later his historical studies at
Poznań
University,
completed in
1938,
and tells about the time young Felczak spent as a holder
of a scholarship received from the Ministry of Religions and Public
Enlightenment in
Eötvös Kollégium
in Budapest.
In his article
Wacław
Felczak

an emissary and organiser of the
communication between our country and Polish emigration
Wojciech Frazik
talks about Felczak s activity as a courier
-
undertaken under the name
of Lech
-
during the Second World War and continued after its end, till
his imprisonment in
1949.
Frazik points to an important role of this courier
mission, great heroism and underestimated merits of Felczak s services to
his homeland, such as his contribution to the establishment of the so-called
W unit. Felczak was also the man who carried to the West first secret
materials related to mass graves in
Katyń.
Frazik reminds how Felczak
provided care for another courier,
Tadeusz Chciuk,
who acted under the
name of
Marek
Celt , and his family, and mentions the friendship that
developed between them.

Wereszycki, a professor of the Jagiellonian
University, played in Felczak s life and scientific career. In
1958

reszycki employed Felczak, a released political prisoner, to work in the chair
of general history of the Jagiellonian University.

atmosphere in the chair headed by Prof. Wereszycki and the scientific
research conducted there, and emphasises the importance of Felczak s work
to Hungarian studies carried out in

Antoni Cetnarowicz
in his article entitled Written with a Hungarian
heart and a Slavic soul outlines the scientific output of
Wacław
Felczak,
paying special attention to his adherence to his first historical interests and
research devoted to the history of Hungary, relations between Poland and
Hungary, and the history of Central Europe in the 19th century. Cetnarowicz
discusses Felczak s articles and works, particularly The history of Hungary
published in
1966
(second edition
1983).
He stresses the significance of
Felczak s research and studies of the history of southern Slav lands,
especially of Yugoslavia, and points to the modern Polish Magyarophily .
The text by
István Kovács
Wacław
Felczak and Hungarians Hamlets
shows a personal character of reminiscences. He evokes stories told him
by Felczak, who described events from the period of the war, arrests by the
communist secret police, imprisonment, events and circumstances that
accompanied the process of strengthening the bonds between Felczak and
his Hungarian friends, and the facts related to Felczak s influence on the
establishment of an opposition party in Hungary
