Introduction
1921.
Yurij
Tíutíunnyk
and his soldiers make a desperate attempt to take revenge against the
invader that has occupied Ukraine. He called his units the Ukrainian insurgent Army
(UPA)
end by
means of a raid penetrated deep into Soviet territory to initiate a rebellion and thereby restore Uk¬
rainian statehood. However the raid turned out to be unsuccessful. Many were killed, others were
taken prisoner and executed. And the Soviet regime remained in power on the territory of Ukraine
for another
70
years. The memory of those killed became another chapter in the national memory of
an enslaved nation. This is the way, the name
«UPA»
first appeared in Ukrainian history.
In
1941
Taras
Borovets
—
'Bulba' used the name
«UPA»
for his insurgent units. In due course
the name was adopted by OUN(b) which managed to unite tens of thousands of soldiers and create
the real army. Since then the abbreviation of
«UPA»
remains in the epicenter of battles, initially truly
military when Ukrainians, Russians, Germans and Poles confronted each other for control of Ukraine.
These days the battles are verbal but it is no longer a question over territory but over informational
control. Any attempts by Ukrainian authorities to define their own official attitude towards the
UPA
and its place and significance in Ukrainian history, inevitably causes waves of protests from our eas¬
tern and western neighbors who would rather give their own conclusions about our history.
The informational war against the
UPA
began as far back as the 1940's when it was used as an
important addition to enemy military operations. Germany in its leaflets called the insurgent army a
creation of «Moscow Jews», while Soviet propaganda proclaimed worldwide that
UPA
soldiers were
collaborators and Hitlerite betrayers, «Ukrainian-German bourgeois nationalists». The victory of the
USSR in the Second World War allowed it not only to concentrate its military forces on the war aga¬
inst the
UPA
but also to increase its own anti-UPA propaganda. Their persistent propaganda attacks
did not cease even after the defeat of the insurgent movement and lasted until the final days of the
Soviet Union's existence. The results of this propaganda work are still felt in Ukraine as Ukrainians
remain divided in their attitude towards the
UPA.
On those territories, where the army operated long
and actively, people recognized the insurgents long ago
—
almost every village in Western Ukraine
has a monument dedicated to the
UPA,
built by its local community. The names of their heroes are
remembered there, not only by the older generation, but also by the youth. At the same time in ot¬
her regions of Ukraine, the
UPA
is treated suspiciously or even with extreme hostility. Their negative
opinion of the
UPA
was not formed by actual, personal contact with the insurgents but only under the
influence of goal-oriented purposeful Soviet propaganda.
Unfortunately, in the numerous debates on the
UPA
that have occurred in our country thro¬
ughout all its years of independence, more often emotions prevail over historic facts. To support
charges of insurgent «collaboration» with Germans, false statements are made such as: «The
UPA
was condemned by the Nuremberg tribunal». This untruth could be very easily refuted by simply
publishing the materials of this international trial, however this has not yet occurred. The majority
of «charges» against the
UPA
can be easily refuted with the help of documents. Probably because of
this, historians interested in an objective interpretation of the past, have published previously unk¬
nown documents and other materials. The number of these document collections is growing quickly,
however it is unfortunate that these printed materials for the most part have not influenced public
consciousness as they remain known only among a narrow circle of specialists. The same can be
said about the majority of
sdentine
academic publications highlighting these problems as they are
rather difficult for the ordinary reader to understand. So, it is time we help ordinary people to clearly
understand their true past.
The idea to create a popular scholarly history of the
UPA
is an old one. The Centre for Research
of the Liberation Movement (CRLM) set as its goal to carry out a thorough scientific work on studying
various aspects of struggle of the Ukrainian insurgents. Its researchers have already achieved certain
success in this regard, i.e. they contributed to the publication of a number of scholarly collections
«The Ukrainian liberation movement», published in the series «Sources to the history of the Ukrain¬
ian national liberation movement» and «Research on the history of the Ukrainian national liberation
movement». Our work has always been well received. However during all our presentations and ot¬
her meetings we have always heard the same request: «Could you give us something to read about
the
UPA
in general.» This project «The Ukrainian Insurgent Army. History of the unconquerable» is
a response to this request. The first stage in the project's realization was a photo exhibition of the
same name which began its journey throughout Ukraine in the spring of
2007.
Its task was to tell
people about the
UPA
—
its formation, the history of development and about the people who created
it. To this effect the easiest language for understanding was used, the language of photographs. The
success of this project has mobilized us to prepare this book version of the exhibition which we have
supplemented with new materials.
This book was written on several levels. The first level is the basic text which tells the story of
the insurgent army including the dynamics of the UPA's development as well as its distinctive feat¬
ures. So the first part of the book focuses on the formation of the army which was accomplished by
the end of
1944.
The next part describes separate aspects of the
UPA 's
functioning. Final parts of the
book highlight the anti-Soviet struggle of the insurgents after
1944,
repressive actions of the Soviet
system directed against the national liberation movement and about the fate of
UPA
soldiers who
10
were imprisoned in concentration camps. Each chapter of the book is supplemented with an English
summary which will assist readers outside of Ukraine to understand the history of the
UPA.
Additional texts in each chapter constitute the second level of the book. They provide informat¬
ion on certain phenomena and focus the reader's attention on important moments. Short encyclopa¬
edic references cited at the bottom of page as well as highlights from documents and memoirs of the
participants of these events we hope, will help the reader better feel the spirit of that era.
Hundreds of photographs make up the third level. They come from various sources
—
ranging
from private collections of people who held on them despite the risk of arrest and imprisonment to
offìcia
I archival establishments in Ukraine and other countries. Research workers ofCRLM have been
gathering photographs for several years and currently the Centre's archive has several thousand
photos, Many photos portray unidentified scenes and people. Still we thought it was important to
include these «anonymous» heroes in the collection. Photographs of that era have their own way
of communicating with the reader, especially those that know little on the subject. Thanks to these
photographs, everyone can now «see» these Ukrainian freedom fighters in the days of their youth.
Energy and a strong belief in victory flows through these old pictures. This photographic record unites
historical documentation with visualization and is powerful method of revealing the real image of the
Ukrainian insurgent.
The authors also tried to present their own vision of
UPA
history, making it clear and unders¬
tandable. For this, we used a large number of sources and literature, mostly those that are easily
accessible for the reader. Our goal was to formulate a complete view of the
UPA
on the basis of alr¬
eady published materials that everyone can borrow from the library. A list of recommended sources
of literature on this topic is found at the end of this book.
This book is a result of many years' work of a group of authors, but it could not have been wr¬
itten without the support of many people. Their materials, remarks, pieces of advice and criticism
were very necessary and useful. So we would like to express our gratitude to Mykhailo Andrusiak,
