SUMMARY
SUMMARY
The content of the book is the result of the ethnological and
historical research related to the logboats dug out from a single piece
of tree
trank in
general and in particular the ones used by the Slovene
fishermen, living in the north Adriatic on the coast between Trieste
and the Timavo river, since their settlement in the
VII
century, after
the migration from their native land in east Europe.
The initial intention of the project focused exclusively on the
mentioned boats but had to be extended when during the
ethimological analysis of the word
čupa
(meaning in Slovene
language the marine dug-out) it appeared that the same word was also
used in the Russian region of lake
limen
near Novgorod. In order to
investigate such an intriguing matter, the research was extended to the
Russian ancient history and the origin of the Slavic peoples. Since the
finds, from the historical and anthropological point of view, were very
interesting and also useful to understand the origin of the Slovene
nation, the author decided to publish them. In such a way the
specialists will have the opportunity to find some data for further
research and the wider public will acquire new interesting information.
The work starts with a general view of the evolution all over the
world of dug-outs as means of transport for goods and persons on
internal waterways and sea. The most important and interesting of
them are mentioned, such as the case of the late president John F.
Kennedy that was sunk with his patrol boat in the South Pacific and
ČUPA
IN DREVÁK
later rescued with a dug-out from a small island by the natives. In the
chapter on European boats the important finds in various regions are
described, dated from the
neolitic
age to the recent days.
Particular attention is dedicated to the Polish finds because they
represent a good example of planned research with remarkable
intellectual and financial efforts by the central authorities and the
Gdansk Maritime museum, that yielded conspicuous results.
Ample treatment is given to the ancient Slavic boats, since they
played an important role in the evolution of Slavic peoples during the
first centuries of our era in the regions of the Balkans, the Russian
and Ukrainian plains, and in North Europe on the Baltic as far as the
Danish border. The use of dug-outs was really conspicuous and
widespread because of the big quantity of lakes, marshes and river
waterways present in their territories. The military role of the crafts is
described with detailed information on their presence in the attacks
and sieges of Constantinople, the Slav colonization of Greece and
sailings to Crete.
The exploit, called Monoxilon II, by the Czech experimental
archaeologists that carved a dug-out similar to
a neolitic
one and
sailed on it for
800
km along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts,
is mentioned in order to convince the skeptics about the possibility of
primitive boats to reach only by means of oar power distant shores.
Part of this chapter gives a short historical outline on the three
early Slav tribes named
Anti, Sclaveni
and
Veneti or Vendi.
The
hypothesis advanced for the formation of the Slovene nation became
here a rather important element to the historians. On the basis of
some documented facts it is explained that the Slovenes, living on
their previous territory beyond the Carpats, were split in two groups
by the Goths headed toward the Black sea around the IV century.
The first splinter group took the way toward the Baltic sea and settled
around the lake
limen,
probably founding Novgorod. The second
migrated westwards, reached the Alps and the Adriatic sea near
Trieste where it remained up to now, forming the present Slovenian
nation.

SUMMARY
A chapter is dealing with the dug-outs on the east Adriatic coast,
which the Croats call ladve (sing, ladva). They were used for fishing
and transport between the mainland and the hundreds of small
islands, and also reached the coast of southern Italy.
A section is dedicated to the Slovenian archaeological finds,
mostly from the Ljubljana marshes around the ancient pile dwellings.
The dug-outs exhibited in the museums are described and drawn
with full details, especially the ones that represent the evolution of
the monoxiles to the more elaborate log boats.
The most important chapter, divided in nine parts, describes the
čupa ,
the first Slovene marine boat. It begins with the
ethimological research, that evidences the use of the term
čupa
in the
gulf of Trieste and in the region of the Russian lake
limen,
confirming the division of the Slovene tribe in two parts. The use of
the above mentioned dug-out for more than thousand years is
documented in the Slovene coastal villages of Barkovlje (Barcola),
Kontovel (Contovello),
Križ (S.
Croce),
Nabrežina (Aurisina), Devin
(Duino),
Stivan (S.
Giovanni al
Timavo),
now all of them in the
territory of the Italian republic.
The boat is analysed from the nautical aspect and its evolution
from lake to sea craft is shown in the old pictures and listed where
found in medieval documents and more recent port authority
registers. Its haulage and the storing ashore is also explained. The last
two still existing dug-outs are dealt with in full details as well as the
carving and the sailing of the new
čupa
with the members of the
Slovene Yacht club
čupa
in Sesljan (Sistiana). The book concludes
with the anecdotes regarding the dug-out, where the reader will find
also a description of a whale hunt occurred in the year
1730
under
the rocks of
Duino
castle.
In addition to the mentioned arguments, the aim of the book is
also to promote the last well conserved dug-out
čupa,
exposed in the
Slovene ethnographic museum in Ljubljana. In this way the visitors
are able to see the original specimen of the craft that has been used
11
ČUPAINDREVAH
for centuries by the Slovene fishermen in the gulf of Trieste. Such
historical absurdity from the nautical view was due to
orographie,
social and political reasons. It represents the absolute record in the
continuous use of a primitive
monoxile
boat in the Mediterranean
sea, where the shipbuilding craftsmanship was highly developed
already in the pre-roman times.
