Martial Law

symbolic forms of memory
History provokes questions about the way in which we remember the past time or what is
needed to condemn the memory. Since the memory itself is deceptive and transitory, we sup¬
port ourselves with measures which help us to maintain it. In this way we create a symbolic
forms of memory. The author, in his article, using results of researches done by poll centres,
tries to answer the question how memory about the events of 13th December,
1981,
the following
days and months creating a sad episode of the Polish history is preserved.

Voivodship Committee of the Polish United Workers Party in Lublin. Creating the picture of
an enemy.
The subject of the article is the analysis of content of
„Sztandar Ludu
[Flag of Working Class],
an organ of the Voivodship level of communist party in Lublin in
1980-1989.
The author analy¬
ses the content of texts placed in this paper from the point of view of creating the picture of an
enemy by communist propaganda, the enemy which, for the regime, was Solidarity . Thus, the
article confirms the thesis that propaganda was, apart from terror, one of two main pillars of the
communist system and language was a tool of its policy. The author stresses that examination of
the language can be one of media allowing for finding various aspects of policy.

Propaganda justification of imposition of martial law in Poland and defending it today
Legitimacy of imposition of martial law on 13th December,
1981
is one of the main historical
controversies of our latest history. Though the Seym of the Republic of Poland with its resolu¬
tion of 1st February,
1992
stated that imposition of martial law was illegal, it did not cut disputes
and assessments are extremely different. The authors of martial law are presented as defenders
of homeland against foreign intervention (choosing lesser evil) or as Soviet puppets. The article
presents interpretations of imposition of martial law functioning in the official propaganda of
communist regime and confronts them with interpretations and explanations of current defend¬
ers of this decision whom, first of all, the author of martial law

tal Central and Eastern Founding Committee of the Independent and Self-Governing Trade
Union Solidarity , the Security Force instituted the case against Solidarity movement under the
cryptonym
Związek .
Within this case, an organized surveillance activity against the regional
leadership of Solidarity was performed till 21s March,
1983.
The author discusses the process
of this surveillance basing on the files of secret communist police stored in the Institute of Na¬
tional Remembrance in Lublin.

Facing the danger... Regiment of Self-Defence at the Voivodship Committee of the Polish
United Workers Party in

One of the most interesting issues, among those connected with the functioning of the commu¬
nist party in the conditions of martial law, is the genesis, initial organization and activities of
self-defense detachment of the Polish United Workers Party, established at the end of
1981.
The
fact of establishing of paramilitary organization, the members of which were equipped with
means of prevention and prepared for repressive activities using fire-arms, by communists is a
significant contribution in finding reality of Poland governed by communists as well as relations
between authority and society. The author presents the issue of self-defense detachments inside
the organization of single party in power using the example of its structures in
Radom.

The title of an article is deceitful on purpose. The author discusses why such a traumatic and
crucial event for the perception of surrounding reality for great number of Poles was not prop¬
erly emphasized and celebrated. Especially in case when the eighth anniversary of imposition of
martial law fell for the time when the government in Poland had been kept for more than two
months by the first since

years non-communist government with
Tadeusz Mazowiecki
at the
lead, and the autumn of nations in Central and Eastern Europe reached culminating point. In
such new conditions it would have been not only legalized but also extremely important as both
the tribute paid, for the first time, openly and officially by Polish sovereign authorities towards
numerous, anonymous heroes of that time and element of creating of a new vision of history of
Poland
-
independent from binding till then the only proper vision. The article tries to explain
why this happened.

Rhetoric of martial law as an attempt to legitimate the communist system
One of more symptomatic features of the Soviet system was an attempt to find the way of its
validation in the eyes of society. What is more, the system was imposed by force, organized and
managed by the communist party and the history of the communist system was the history of
violence which with different intensity and different forms was present there where this
utopia
was tried to be introduced. The communists saw the possibility of legitimization of their author¬
ity in an extremely developed propaganda, the aim of which was to rule over the minds of
people. The propaganda system of the People s Republic of Poland constituted a subtle form of
fight for taking control over human being. Propaganda model serving legitimization of martial
law appeared just after the establishing and registration of Solidarity and served as a tool to
show Solidarity as an anarchistic, destructive, irresponsible and anti-State organization. Al¬
though the proclamation of imposition of martial law did not followed from the above, attentive
observer did not have doubts that the authority prepared itself to deal with any liberation activi¬
ties.

Reinterpretation of the history of Poland in
1914-1989
using the example of chosen historical
syntheses
Year
1989,
which started the fundamental changes in political system in Poland, brought pro¬
found revision of the way of presentation of the latest history of our country, which is done in
the sphere of interpretation of particular events and phenomena as well as in the sphere of the

selection of facts. This writing from the very beginning is dictated not only by routine meth¬
odological reasons connected with possibilities of using new sources and settlements made on
the basis of other social sciences. The break-through in the character of studies is determined
additionally by lifting censorship which stood on guard of authority of dogmas following di¬
rectly from Marks historical materialism. The author tries to show how the history of Poland in
the twentieth century is presented in synthetic works after
1989
in comparison to handbooks
written within the period of existence of methodology of historical materialism.
