Item Description:A ballad in the form of a mock litany satirizing the army and Parliament. - Annotation on Thomason copy: "7ber [i.e. September] 24th". - Place of publication from Wing. - Reproductions of the original in the British Library. - The principal author of Mercurius melancholicus (1647-1649) was John Hackluyt; but rival periodicals with the same name sporadically appeared, at least one by John Crouch, others by Martin Parker and possibly one by John Taylor. The anti-Presbyterian tone of this ballad denies Hackluyt's authorship but is quite suitable to the verse of Crouch, Parker, or Taylor. - Thomason, E.408[20]. - Wing (2nd ed., 1994), A3714
