The study Twentieth Century Polish String Quartet
-
Transformations, Trends,
Ideas examines the history of the 20th century music in Poland in the context of
specific form of string quartet. The author s main purpose is to present plurality
of styles, composers techniques and formal concepts observed in the area of this
very unique medium, since the string quartet, with its intimate character has always
been one of the favourites in expressing a state of reflexion, prayerful meditation
or affirmation of life.
The primary objective of this study is threefold and results from the hierar¬
chy of the broad spectrum of problems. The opening chapter establishes historical
perspective and sketches the 18th and 19th century history of string quartet and
its tradition. Chapter II, the most comprehensive one, presents the complexity of
transformation processes of form and sound material of the 20th century string
quartet. It considers the attitude of Polish composers towards the traditional cyclic
form of string quartet
(3
or
4
parts), with principal of contrast between parts and
with preferred sonata form based on tonal relations, although tonality at the be¬
ginning of the 20th century was strongly weakened. This kind of perspective made
possible to present composers output in connection with the historical model as its
neoromantic
continuation, as its modern and neoclassical modification, as its nega¬
tion (during the avant-garde time) and its post-modern acceptation.
The third chapter presents an aesthetic-ideological perspective; the author ex¬
plores here the differences between composers in perception of the idea of string
quartet. Consequently, this chapter completes the problem of transformations of
technical aspects in composing a string quartet, discussed earlier (chapter II), with
composers points of view in these matters and with presentation of some indi¬
vidual, most interesting cases.
The combination of these three research perspectives, with their specific, typi¬
cal for each other methods, offers an overview of the 20th century Polish string
quartet with all its variants and types. In big part the study draws on archival ma¬
terials, including unpublished manuscripts of quartets. The lists (alphabetical and
chronological) of Polish string quartets of the 20th century, included in Annexes,

items. This material proves that the idiom of string quartet is still
(or even

becomes more) attractive for contemporary composers. Especially in
Poland, in successive quarters of the 20th century, the amount of string quartets
is doubled and the interest in this kind of music constantly grows among compo¬
sers.
The significance of this study results from the fact that for the first time such
a comprehensive synthesis of modern string quartet has appeared in the musi-
cological research in Poland. Secondly, a reader receives here a useful source of
materials and information about works
