| adam_text | This monograph has been written for the occasion of the 50th anniversary of
the discovery of
interferon
(IFN) and aims to share recent discoveries and to
emphasize the important insights gained in the rapidly developing area of
pathogen recognition and the innate antiviral immune response. Although
originally discovered as a component of the innate antiviral response, the
interaction of type I IFN with the acquired immune system is clearly emerging,
and the importance of the strict regulation of IFN induction and its timely
synthesis has been demonstrated by the finding that deregulated IFN synthesis
is associated with autoimmune diseases. This monograph, which includes
chapters presenting the current highlights in IFN research, illustrates the far-
reaching role IFN plays not only in the context of cellular defense against
pathogens, but also in the requirement for a fine balance between the positive
and negative effects of IFN.
