Anglo-Norman Vision of History,
Kenneth Tiller argues that
uses the history of the ancient Britons
to inspire the post-Conquest Anglo-
Saxons to resist the suppression and
marginal ization of their language and
to take an active role in writing English
history as he reworks Latin, Anglo-
Norman and French texts into Middle
English alliterative verse. Positing the
writing of history as an active function
of translation, this study situates
Anglo-Norman and Angevin
historiography in the context of
colonialist and post-colonialist
translation theories. Tiller also makes
the case for the central role of Arthur
in the development of English
historiography. Presenting history as
a matter of translation,
suggests that what we think of as
history is always open to question.
