Summary
This book is the first monograph in the Czech language of
Its aim is to increase familiarity with Zelenka s work and artistic activities both
in musical circles and among the general public in the composer s home country.
It however is more than a mere compilation. The book offers new information
and insights into works that have not been covered in detail by other researchers.
The author challenges many claims by previous authors and reads some sources
differently. Additionally, the book aims to introduce Czech perspectives into the
study of
composer as a Czech and to which he had to react, and to look at the hitherto
unstudied role Czech music has played in influencing the style and inventiveness
of his work.
The book is organized chronologically. It divides the composer s life into
ten periods, corresponding to the book s first ten chapters. Chapter i, Home

It considers how his country s troubled history, and the ideas and symbols arising
from past conflicts, may have influenced Zelenka s consciousness and have been
reflected in his attitudes.
Chapter
retells the composer s childhood and youth in
looks at the period during which it is assumed he studied in Prague. It also
considers the possible role guilt may have played in the composer s youth.
Since we have very few sources describing the composer s life, family and closest
associates during this period, the first two chapters are dominated by speculations
and unanswered questions.

reason why this task was assigned to the young Czech composer Jan Dismas
