Mielec
and its region between
1911

is another work of
Janusz Krężel,
presenting the development
ofthat
educational organization in a small town of south- eastern
Poland.
The 1st
Tadeusz Kościuszko
Scouting Troop was formed at the beginning of the XX century
in the nest of the Polish Gymnastic Association
Sokół
and it was one of the first Scouting
troops on the Polish territory which was then under partition.
Deep patriotism, implanted in the members of the troop by the instructors, enabled the
growth of many outstanding members of the society, such as
Kazimierz Aleksander
Sabbat
-
the future President of the Republic of Poland on emigration
(1986-1989),
Władysław Jasiń-
ski
Jędruś
and many others.
An exceptionally heroic page in history was written down by Scouts from
Mielec
during the
First World War, fighting in the legions of
Józef Piłsudski
and sacrificing their lives for the
freedom of the motherland. They also took part in the Polish
-
bolshevick war under general
Józef
Haller.
Wonderful heroism was shown by the Scouts from
Mielec
during the Second World War,
through their work in
Szare Szeregi
(A Scouting division of Polish Armed Forces). They fo¬
ught with both the German and Soviet enemies. Many of them died for the country, many
others were murdered in concentration camps and in
Katyń.
Here, in
Mielec,
during the German occupation, in the aviation company, called then
Flug¬
zeugwerk ,
Scouts produced a conspirational Scout Cross, which was spectacular in the scope of
the whole fighting Europe.
When World War II finished, a significant number of Scouts from
Mielec
formed the oppo¬
sition against a new occupying country
-
this time the Soviet Union, undertaking the armed
conspiration
for sovereignty. They were punished for this with severe judicial sentences and
imprisoned for several years in hard conditions of PRL s prisons.
