Summary
'Vladi
still a little boy, he and his parents fled the increasingly violent fascism and inexorable
hunger of his native
difficult, and there was a great deal he did not really understand
fact. Seventy years later, when his large and apparently clumsy prominently-knuckled
fingers bring to joyful life his diatonic accordion and coax from it an ancient Slovene
melody, already forgotten, perhaps, at home, it seems to be a living relic, an open door
into the past, something which will die with him. And what will remain? Will everything
that is Slovene disappear with him? What has been transplanted into his descendants;
how long will they keep his memory and a sense of belonging to the country where he
was born; what does Slo
never seen that little country beneath the far-off Alps of Europe?'
These are the fundamental questions noted in the introduction to the book and
around which the present text revolves. It takes national identity as an important part of
personal identity which reaches even greater expression in the emigrant context. This is
first felt by the emigrant himself, and then by his descendants who almost of necessity
find themselves in the vice of dual socialisation.
The 'new' culture is for them not new but the only one they know, at least the
only true one. No matter how intensively Sloveneness is transmitted to the descendant, it
cannot overcome physical distance, the lack of contact, the imaginariness or even 'fairy-
taleness' of the specific culture that is called Slovenia; they lack the experience of terri¬
torial belonging, and the presence of the majority, 'graspable' culture is too strong. In
what forms, then, is a Slovene national identity possible among those who have grown
up in a different environment, in this case a South American one? This is the main ques¬
tion and at the same time the purpose of the present work. To describe, explain, predict
and in this way to answer.
The theme we have set ourselves is by no means as simple as the question itself
seems. A great deal of prior knowledge of and acquaintance with the target population
was necessary. Carrying out the key part of the work

The question of emigration in the general sense has already been dealt with fre¬
quently in both Slovene and foreign literature, but in the great majority of cases has
involved historical and occasionally sociological or psychological treatment of the emi¬
grants themselves. The present text tackles the problem of preserving national identity

from the viewpoint of cultural anthropology (to which the methodology of the work also
conforms), and the field of research is itself relatively new: the descendants of Slovene
emigrants.
The subject demands interdisciplinary work
methodologies of cultural anthropology, social psychology, sociology and history. His¬
tory is important for the understanding of the present (with which this work is con¬
cerned), social psychology and sociology provide a theoretical basis for understanding
conditions and relations between individuals and the environment and the social proc¬
esses which influence them, while cultural anthropology itself (within the framework of
which the work unfolds) gives to all of this graspability, practicality and life. It directs all
these branches towards the goal that has been set, and limits them so that none can
dominate and thus 'upset the apple-cart'.
The text comprises four main sections, the basis of which is a study visit among
the target population. I shall start then with a brief word about the trip itself and my
method of work.
From the end of March to the end of June
study trip in South America. Since written sources can only be of partial help in this type
of work, it was of the utmost importance to visit and move among the descendants of
emigrants. In this way research is built on the writer's own experience, which is a very
necessary feature of cultural anthropological research.
In three months I visited all the major Slovene centres in South America with the
exception of Caracas in Venezuela (due to financial and transport difficulties): Buenos
Aires,
Chile (Chile) and Sao Paulo (Brazil). I conducted over

of emigration and identity.

cally and mentally. I spent about

It often happened that after a journey of a thousand kilometres and a sleepless
night I had to be ready to follow events and make the most of opportunities, to talk with
concentration about the topics, and then in the evening note it all down in my journal.
Moving among the emigrants and communicating with them were considerably
easier this time since their situation, which at least to a certain extent is a specific one,
and their 'mentality' were already known to me. My knowledge of Spanish proved to be
extremely useful, if not essential. When looking for people to interview I generally met
with a good response. This was greatly helped by appearances on three Slovene radio
broadcasts.
The purpose of the trip was to move among second generation Slovene immi¬

preservation of a Slovene identity, acquaint myself with the work done by cultural soci¬
eties in the field of identity, and to make contacts with the institutions that deal with
similar themes to the Institute for Emigration Studies in Ljubljana.
The work took place in very varied circumstances, since I tended towards con¬
tacts that were as informal as possible and adapted myself as much as I could, trying to
fit in with them and practising the established anthropological methodological approach
of Observation through participation'
I did not record conversations during lunch or dinner for example, or even at other times.
I experienced communication difficulties with certain interviewees because of the fact
that I myself was from (formerly Communist and to some still hostile) Slovenia. Many
were bothered by my making occasional notes in my notebook, and even people used to
making public appearances were slightly uncomfortable at the sight of a microphone.
For the sake of relaxed and open conversations about what are very personal and, for
some, intimate issues, I chose for the most part to use
tant observations from individual conversations.
I asked the people I spoke with about the following:

Visits to people's homes were particularly helpful, since this enabled me to get a
more complete picture of my interviewees.
I met an extremely varied group of people, from intellectuals to semi-qualified
labourers, from the extremely wealthy to those on the margins of society, from children
to people in their nineties (the latter belong to the first generation but their testimonies
were in any case extremely useful), from those who were apolitical to those who were
extremely politically involved, from fluent Slovene speakers to those who did not even
know a word of Slovene. The conversations took place either one-to-one or over a meal
with a whole family or entire group, in Slovene, Spanish and also English.
It is worth stressing that I was quite unable to find any of those people who are
completely assimilated and no longer have any kind of contact with Slovenes, since
because of their lack of response no trace of them remains. In proportional terms they are
the largest group, especially among those who emigrated before the war or formed part
of the first wave of immigrants in South America at the turn of the century.
I did not get involved in collecting archive material on the arrival of the Slovenes,
or in trying to establish numbers, since they immigrated in different periods as citizens

of different countries (Austro-Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia), many of them had Italianised
surnames, and immigrants arriving in different countries were only asked about their
nationality or mother tongue for brief periods or not at all. Nowhere is it possible to find
in the archives a column headed 'Immigrants from Slovenia', and a search through all
the immigrants from Italy, Austro-Hungary or Yugoslavia would have to focus on sepa¬
rating out Slovene surnames (and even that is not always reliable).
Over the course of my stay, in addition to conversations with individuals, fami¬
lies and groups, and the representatives of Slovene institutions in Argentina, I attended
several Slovene masses and social and cultural events for immigrants.
The book begins with an explanation of the methodology employed and a theo¬
retical explanation of key terms. 'Identity', 'socialisation', 'acculturation', etc. are com¬
paratively well-known expressions but deeper definitions are essential to give the work
as solid a construction as possible, and to enable proper understanding of the text that
follows. The second section has a somewhat historical aspect. It describes the settlement
of Slovenes in South America, their social organisation, and then in each category sepa¬
rately arrives at present conditions. In Argentina it describes in detail Slovene societies
or communities of emigrants from the period between the wars
and
and political emigration in Buenos Aires; there is a similar description of the Prekmurian
community in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the emigrant community in Brazil, particu¬
larly in Sao Paulo. The section also touches on the smaller number of Slovenes in Chile.
Particular attention is given to the descendants of settlers between the wars who are
resisting the disappearance of their ethnic identity, and to the descendants of political
emigrants who were forced to leave their homeland immediately after the war. Between
six and seven thousand emigrants came to Argentina, and in fifty years this community
has managed to preserve an extremely high level of Slovene identity, including an al¬
most faultless knowledge of Slovene, a highly developed social and cultural life, educa¬
tion and upbringing, etc., in which an important role has been played by the powerful
presence of the Slovene Catholic Church, or rather Slovene priests who arrived along
with the other refugees. While acknowledging absolutely the successes in the preserva¬
tion of Sloveneness, the text in this section is also critical at times, especially where it
identifies the conflict situations which appear at the level of the relationship of the indi¬
vidual to such a relatively solidly built community with its own (informal) rules.
The third chapter is what makes the work different, unique, innovative and au¬
tonomous, since it is almost entirely the result of my own conclusions and inferences. It
establishes connections between individual facts, forwards new observations and on this
basis embarks on a formulating of models and making predictions of processes in the
future. It establishes that among the first generation the Slovene identity is almost intact,
since the primary and often the second socialisation took place in the primary culture,
that is, in Slovenia. Even if conscious behaviour is apparently 'non-Slovene', subcon¬
sciously conditioned actions are typically 'Slovene'.
The situation is different with the descendants of emigrants, who are usually sub¬
ject to dual socialisation: to the influence of the primary culture of their parents in the
family circle, and the pressures of the dominant majority culture in the street, among

their peers, at school, via the mass media, etc. This is particularly true of children in
families where both parents are Slovenes. The individual thus finds himself in a situation
which in most cases could be described as a 'dual identity'
culture is significantly stronger in the case of mixed marriages; in every case the major¬
ity culture has the advantage since it is 'tangible', the individual lives and works in it
every day, while the primary culture of the parents is for the growing person imaginary,
'semi-real', and does not belong to the real world of everyday existence. This is the
reason that so much more effort is needed to preserve a high level of Slovene ethnic
affiliation among the descendants of emigrants. These efforts in any case do not neces¬
sarily lead to the desired results, and can even have the opposite effect
from this culture.
The preservation of the ethnic identity of one's forebears is influenced by the
possibility of motivation for self-preservation. This on the other hand is the consequence
of the (various) causes of emigration, distance from the mother country, the difference of
the immigrant culture and the positive attitude to socio-political conditions in the mother
country. Ethnic identity is preserved in the family, in emigrants' societies and their insti¬
tutions and in ethnic religious institutions. It is preserved by preserving customs, typical
food, music and dance, cultivating the political tradition, preserving and cultivating the
mother tongue of the parents, typical symbols, historical memory, via cultural activity,
and so on. This model is followed by an attempt to design a moving qualitative scale of
the level of feeling of ethnic identity among the descendants of Slovene emigrants. There
are nine of these levels, although none of them implies a moral evaluation. They merely
attempt to show characteristic forms, with the supposition that each of them is the most
that the individual is capable of in a given social context or set of circumstances. The
levels range from the 'identification identity', which includes the largest section of the
overall population of 'people of Slovene origin' (simply knowing about the origin of
their ancestors), via the 'mobilisation' identity (this brings individuals to active coopera¬
tion in Slovene societies or to other forms of this type of activity), to the rare, subcon¬
scious use of the (Slovene) mother tongue and in the final phase even a decision to move
back to the original homeland. There are currently more than a hundred such people in
Slovenia.
The journal of the trip contains daily observations based on unstructured conver¬
sations, meetings or mere interaction with Slovene emigrants during my three-month
stay in South America. They are complemented by letters, articles and interviews (or just
extracts from them) on ethnic identity among the target population. These are further
complemented by the exceptionally valuable letters of members of different generations
from different continents on the theme of the preservation of (Slovene) identity or its
duality. These compositions give the book something of the flavour of an anthology,
since the reader has the opportunity to compare the author's observations with the reflec¬
tions that have arisen in different situations, on different continents, among the people to
whom these issues actually relate.

.Estos son los fundamentales interrogantes conceptuales, formulados en la in¬
troducción de la obra, en torno a los cuales gira el presente texto. La conciencia nacional
es considerada una parte relevante de la identidad personal, que adquiere una expresión
aún mayor en una situación de expatriación. Esto lo siente en primer lugar el emigrante
mismo, luego sus descendientes, quienes casi necesariamente terminan encontrándose
atenazados por una doble socialización. La »nueva« cultura no es para ellos nueva, sino
la única
de lo esloveno a los descendientes, ésta no puede superar la lejanía física, lo inasible, lo
imaginario, mejor dicho, lo »novelesco« de aquella cultura específica llamada Eslove-
nia; falta la experiencia de la pertenencia territorial, demasiado fuerte es la presencia del
entorno mayoritario y »palpable«. ¿En qué forma es posible una identidad nacional eslo¬
vena en aquellos que crecieron en un entorno diferente, en este caso en un entorno suda¬
mericano? Ésta es la pregunta fundamental y, a la vez, el propósito del presente trabajo.
Describir, aclarar, pronosticar y, con ello, responder.
El tema propuesto no es de ningún modo tan sencillo como parece ser sencilla la
pregunta misma. Fue necesario mucho conocimiento previo y el conocimiento de la
población objeto, una enorme cantidad de energía para la realización del trabajo clave
el viaje de estudio, la empatia y la concentración para la comprensión y el análisis de los
mensajes y, por supuesto, el tiempo
lo suyo«.
El problema de la emigración en general fue tratado con frecuencia en la literatu¬
ra eslovena y extranjera, pero en gran medida se trata de elaboraciones históricas, a
veces también sociológicas o psicológicas sobre de los emigrantes. El presente texto
elabora la problemática de la conservación de la identidad nacional desde el punto de

nuevo es también el

El tema exige un trabajo interdisciplinario, una combinación de los resultados y
de la metodología de trabajo de la antropología cultural, la psicología social, la socio¬
logía y la historia. Ésta última es importante para la comprensión del presente (con el
que esta en relación este trabajo), la psicología social y la sociología aportan la base
teórica para la comprensión del acontecer y de las relaciones entre el individuo y el
medio, y de los procesos sociales que influyen en aquellos, mientras que la antropología
cultural (en cuyo campo se desenvuelve este trabajo) le confiere a todo ello concreción,
practicidad, vida. Esta última orienta todas estas ramas del conocimiento hacia la meta
propuesta y las acota de tal modo que una

El texto esta compuesto de cuatro partes principales, basadas en la visita de estu¬
dio de la población objeto que realicé, por ello, diremos en primer lugar algunas palabras
sobre el viaje mismo y la forma de trabajo.

recurrir a las fuentes escritas, fue sumamente necesario visitar y convivir con los descen¬
dientes de emigrantes y es por ello que esta investigación se fue construyendo sobre la
experiencia personal del autor, lo que es absolutamente necesario para una investigación
antropológica cultural.
En tres meses visité todos los grandes centros eslovenos, a excepción de Caracas
en Venezuela (dificultades económicas y técnicas, mejor dicho, de transporte): Buenos
Aires, Mendoza,
Chile (Chile) y Sao Paulo (Brasil). Realicé más de
la convivencia misma con los emigrantes, mejor dicho, sus descendientes, me interioricé
con la labor de alrededor de

la emigración y la identidad.
Debido a las grandes distancias entre las ciudades, el viaje fue agotador tanto
psíquica como físicamente, ya que en ómnibus o en automóvil consumí exactamente
horas, durante las cuales recorrí

por ejemplo, después de mil kilómetros de viaje y una noche en vela debí estar atento a
los acontecimientos y las oportunidades, dialogar atentamente sobre el tema propuesto y
a la noche incluso registrar todo ello en mi diario.
El trato con los emigrantes y la comunicación con ellos fue esta vez notablemente
más fácil, dado que su situación específica y su mentalidad me eran
cierto punto

general una reacción positiva; a ese respecto fue de mucha ayuda mi participación en
tres estaciones radiales.

el Estudio de las Emigraciones
Mi labor se fue desarrollando en circunstancias muy variadas, pues traté de estab¬
lecer contactos que fueran lo más informales posible y, por ello, me fui adaptando en
grado máximo, traté de llegar a ser parte de ellos, practicar el concepto metodológico
predominante de la antropología cultural »observación con participación«. Es por esta
razón que, por ejemplo, los diálogos que se llevaron a cabo durante almuerzos o cenas, y
también otros, en su mayoría no fueron grabados. Con algunos de mis interlocutores
tuve al comienzo algunas dificultades en la comunicación por el hecho mismo de venir
de Eslovenia (anteriormente un país comunista y para algunos aún hoy en día un país
enemigo), para algunos era molesto de que periódicamente anotara mis reflexiones en
una libreta, la grabación incomodó incluso a aquellos que estaban acostumbrados a ac¬
tuar en público. A fin de lograr un diálogo distendido y abierto acerca de temas muy
personales y, para algunas personas, íntimos, me dediqué en general a llevar un diario
personal de las observaciones más importantes de cada diálogo.
Mis interlocutores respondieron a preguntas que se referían a

hogar, cómo era la relación del medio con su »eslovenidad«, cómo habían vivido
durante su infancia el proceso de la doble inculturación,

eslovena, el idioma, a los amigos.

dad eslovena, el idioma, etc.
Especialmente positivas fueron las visitas a los hogares, pues de ese modo la
imagen de mi interlocutor era más acabada.
Mis encuentros fueron con una población
lectuales hasta obreros semicalifícados, desde gente muy pudiente hasta personas
mente
mera generación, pero sus testimonios fueron igualmente muy bienvenidos), desde gen¬
te apolítica hasta personas en extremo politizadas, desde individuos que hablaban fluida¬
mente el idioma esloveno hasta aquellos que no sabían ni una sola palabra de esloveno.
Las entrevistas se desarrollaron en privado o en ocasión de la comida con toda la familia,

Debo recalcar que sencillamente no pude localizar a aquellos que se han asimila¬
do totalmente y no mantienen contacto alguno con lo esloveno, dado que, por su falta de

interes, se
numeroso, especialmente entre los pertenecientes a los emigrantes de preguerra y a la
primer ola de emigrantes en Sudamérica al final del siglo.
Durante mi trabajo no me dediqué a la recopilación de datos de archivo concer¬
nientes a la llegada de los eslovenos, ni a la estimación de su número, dado que fueron
afluyendo en distintos períodos como ciudadanos de distintos países (Imperio austro-
húngaro, Italia, Yugoslavia), un número elevado de ellos poseían apellidos italianizados.
Sólo en ciertas épocas o quizás nunca se les interrogó sobre su nacionalidad o su lengua
materna al arribar a los distintos países. Es por ello que en los archivos nos es posible
encontrar una categoría específica »inmigrantes de Eslovenia« y la búsqueda entre los
inmigrantes de Italia, del Imperio austro-húngaro o de Yugoslavia debería estar centrada
en la identificación basada en los apellidos (más o menos inciertamente eslovenos.)
Además de realizar distintas charlas con individuos particulares, familias grupos
y representantes de instituciones eslovenas en Argentina, durante los tres meses que
duró mi estadía participé en varias misas eslovenas y distintos actos sociales y culturales
de los emigrantes.
Mi texto comienza con una aclaración de la metodología de trabajo y la explica¬
ción teórica de los conceptos claves. »Identidad«, »socialización«, »aculturación«, etc.,
son expresiones medianamente conocidas, pero algunas definiciones profundas son la
base necesaria para una construcción del tarabajo lo más firme posible y para una com¬
prensión correcta de lo que sigue. La segunda parte
describe la afluencia de los eslovenos a Sudamérica, su organización institucional, pa¬
sando en cada categoría a la situación actual. Así se describen con cierto detalle las
asociaciones eslovenas, o sea, las colectividades de emigrantes del período de entreguer-
ras
rio, los eslovenos de Prekmurje en Buenos Aires) y los emigrantes políticos en Buenos
Aires, Bariloche
de los eslovenos de Prekmurje en Montevideo (Uruguay), como asimismo las colectivi¬
dades de emigrantes en Brasil, ante todo en Sao Paulo, a la vez que se hace mención de
la presencia menor de los eslovenos en Chile. Una atención especial se ha dedicado a los
descendientes de los emigrantes de entreguerras que luchan con la desaparición de su
identidad étnica eslovena, y a los descendientes de los emigrantes políticos que se vieron
obligados a abandonar su patria al finalizar la guerra. A Argentina arribaron
de estos últimos y en cincuenta años esta comunidad ha logrado conservar un nivel
excepcionalmente
fecto del idioma esloveno, con su propia vida institucional y cultural, su propia educa¬
ción
presencia de la Iglesia católica eslovena, mejor dicho, de los sacerdotes eslovenos que
llegaron con los demás emigrantes. Junto al reconocimiento total de los éxitos en la
conservación de lo esloveno, el texto es en esta parte por momentos también crítico,
especialmente cuando constata las situaciones conflictivas que aparecen a nivel de la
relación del individuo con una comunidad con sus reglas (no formales) construida de
una manera relativamente rígida.
El tercer capítulo es el que le confiere al trabajo su diferencia distintiva, unicidad,

vas observaciones y sobre esta base se encamina también a la elaboración de modelos y

dad eslovena ha quedado intacta, ya que la socialización primaria y, en parte, a menudo
también la secundaria se llevó a cabo en la cultura primaria, o sea, en Eslo venia. Incluso

En los matrimonios de nacionalidad mixta la influencia de la cultura mayoritaria es esen¬
cialmente mayor. En todos los casos la cultura mayoritaria tiene preeminencia, ya que
ésta es »palpable«, el individuo vive, opera diariamente en ella, mientras que la cultura
primaria de los padres es para el joven imaginaria,
real cotidiano. Es por ello que para la conservación de un alto nivel de pertenencia étnica
eslovena se hace necesario para los descendientes de los emigrantes un esfuerzo mucho
mayor, el que de todos modos a menudo no da frutos, mejor dicho, puede producir inlcu-
so el efecto contrario
En la conservación de la identidad étnica de los predecesores influye la posibili¬
dad de una motivación para la conservación misma, siendo ésta consecuencia de: (distin¬
tas) causas del exilio, lejanía de la madre patria, la diferencia de la cultura de los emi¬
grantes, una relación positiva con respecto a la situación político-social en la madre
patria. La identidad étnica se conserva en la familia, en las asociaciones de los emigran¬
tes y en sus instituciones, en las instituciones étnicas religiosas, y todo ello a través de la
conservación de las costumbres, comidas típicas, música y danza, el mantenimiento de
la tradición política, la conservación y el mantenimiento del idioma materno de los pa¬
dres, de los símbolos típicos, de la memoria histórica, con la creación cultural, etc. A
continuación de este modelo sigue el intento de elaboración de una escala cualitativa
móvil del nivel de sentimiento de identidad étnica en los descendientes de emigrantes
eslovenos. Hay nueve niveles, pero ninguno de ellos implica una valoración moral, sino
que sólo intenta mostrar formas características, con el presupuesto de que cada nivel es
lo máximo que un individuo puede alcanzar en un cierto contexto social, o sea, en el
entramado de ciertas circunstancias. Los distintos niveles abarcan desde una »identidad
identificacional«, a la que pertenece la parte mayoritaria de la población total de »perso¬
nas de ascendencia eslovena« (el sólo conocimiento del origen de los predecesores),
pasando por la identidad »movilizadora« (ésta lleva a los individuos a participar activa¬
mente en las asociaciones eslovenas o a otras formas de actividad de este tipo), hasta el
uso habitual, inconciente del idioma materno (esloveno) y en la fase última incluso a la

Abstract
The book represents a continuation of the study of the question of the preserva¬
tion of ethnic identity among Slovene emigrants which I began seven years ago as a
student of journalism. The bulk of the text is based on my master's thesis on cultural
anthropology.
The work deals with the issues of the preservation of a (Slovene) ethnic identity
among the members of the second (and third) generation of Slovene emigrants in South
America, especially in Argentina, which was the destination of the majority of emigrat¬
ing Slovenes.
The text begins with a look at some basic theoretical points relating to the
inculturation process; greatest attention is paid to the revival of knowledge about group
identity, political identity and other forms of identity, the difference between the terms
culture, ethnicity, nationality and nation, the connection between socialisation and the
forming of ethnic identity, and a clarification of the concepts of acculturation and as¬
similation.
After tying the theoretical concept of acculturation to the more concrete example
of emigration, and following a brief historical introduction, I give a description of cur¬
rent situations in the individual countries where Slovene emigrants or their descendants
now live. The chapter, which is descriptive in nature, pays most attention to Slovenes in
Argentina. It begins with a short description of the three main (historically conditioned)
'waves' of emigration, and then passes on to a description of individual communities. It
begins with prewar emigrants and analyses in some detail conditions among postwar
political emigrants or their descendants. This part of the text already represents a shift
from bare description to commentary and analysis, particularly in relation to the causes
and energy behind the continued organised preservation of ethnic identity in this com¬
munity and the problem of the duality of socialisation among the descendants of emi¬
grants.
The description also makes use of empirical/historical data on, for example, the
causes and methods of emigration, the establishing of societies, and conditions then and
now in Argentina and other countries (Chile, Uruguay, Brazil), on which basis it is pos¬
sible to conduct a qualitative discussion of the present and future.
There then follows a short chapter containing a comparison with emigration from
Lithuania to South America.
The third part of the book is analytical and very much my own work. It summa¬
rises observations made during a three-month study visit to South America, and com¬
pares them with those made seven and two years ago, during my first and second stays
among this group of people. It notes the main characteristics of the members of the first

generation, in other words emigrants who experienced their primary socialisation within
the primary (Slovene) society. The chapter mainly serves as an introduction to the analy¬
sis of the second generation, after which I create my own model of the presentation of
ethnic identity among emigrants. This illustrates the factors which have an influence on
the preservation of ethnic identity (motivation, differences in the reasons for emigration,
the difference of the immigrant culture, a positive attitude towards conditions in the
'mother country', etc.), the mediums via which this is preserved (the family, societies,
religious institutions), and phenomena such as cultural creativity, language, customs,
political tradition, food, etc.
The text also touches on the issue from a slightly different point of view and
formulates qualitative levels for the perception of ethnic identity which it then arranges
on a movable scale: from extreme non-connection with the culture of one's immigrant
parents, to the other extreme
point has been largely imaginary. This last group is particularly interesting because of its
unique process of re-inculturation into a society which the individuals concerned have
perhaps never seen with their own eyes.

descriptions of the situation, the analytical part of the text is clearly inclined towards

even the most sensitive topics such as the encroachment of assimilation even into the
ranks of the most persistent and till now 'intact' groups.
The main focus of the work is on two different examples of the preservation of
ethnic identity through the generations: prewar emigration, which follows a relatively
standard assimilation model, and postwar political emigration in Argentina, whose ac¬
culturation model is non-standard.
The discussion closes with a short commentary which looks at the future for
Slovene emigrants, which seems most feasible if the ideas of politics and language are
not emphasised, in other words if there is no policy of excluding those who think differ¬
ently (politically) and those who no longer speak Slovene.
Weight is lent to the work by an extensive supplement containing conversations,
diary entries and certain written accounts. I rely on these in particular in the analytical
part of the text. The book is given special weight by the letters from members of various
generations of Slovene emigrants from various continents
and reflections with the help of which the reader is able to compare the author's own
observations from South America with those written from other points of view.

still a little boy, he and his parents fled the increasingly violent fascism and inexorable
hunger of his native
difficult, and there was a great deal he did not really understand
fact. Seventy years later, when his large and apparently clumsy prominently-knuckled
fingers bring to joyful life his diatonic accordion and coax from it an ancient Slovene
melody, already forgotten, perhaps, at home, it seems to be a living relic, an open door
into the past, something which will die with him. And what will remain? Will everything
that is Slovene disappear with him? What has been transplanted into his descendants;
how long will they keep his memory and a sense of belonging to the country where he
was born; what does Slo
never seen that little country beneath the far-off Alps of Europe?'
These are the fundamental questions noted in the introduction to the book and
around which the present text revolves. It takes national identity as an important part of
personal identity which reaches even greater expression in the emigrant context. This is
first felt by the emigrant himself, and then by his descendants who almost of necessity
find themselves in the vice of dual socialisation.
The 'new' culture is for them not new but the only one they know, at least the
only true one. No matter how intensively Sloveneness is transmitted to the descendant, it
cannot overcome physical distance, the lack of contact, the imaginariness or even 'fairy-
taleness' of the specific culture that is called Slovenia; they lack the experience of terri¬
torial belonging, and the presence of the majority, 'graspable' culture is too strong. In
what forms, then, is a Slovene national identity possible among those who have grown
up in a different environment, in this case a South American one? This is the main ques¬
tion and at the same time the purpose of the present work. To describe, explain, predict
and in this way to answer.
The theme we have set ourselves is by no means as simple as the question itself
seems. A great deal of prior knowledge of and acquaintance with the target population
was necessary. Carrying out the key part of the work

The question of emigration in the general sense has already been dealt with fre¬
quently in both Slovene and foreign literature, but in the great majority of cases has
involved historical and occasionally sociological or psychological treatment of the emi¬
grants themselves. The present text tackles the problem of preserving national identity

from the viewpoint of cultural anthropology (to which the methodology of the work also
conforms), and the field of research is itself relatively new: the descendants of Slovene
emigrants.
The subject demands interdisciplinary work
methodologies of cultural anthropology, social psychology, sociology and history. His¬
tory is important for the understanding of the present (with which this work is con¬
cerned), social psychology and sociology provide a theoretical basis for understanding
conditions and relations between individuals and the environment and the social proc¬
esses which influence them, while cultural anthropology itself (within the framework of
which the work unfolds) gives to all of this graspability, practicality and life. It directs all
these branches towards the goal that has been set, and limits them so that none can
dominate and thus 'upset the apple-cart'.
The text comprises four main sections, the basis of which is a study visit among
the target population. I shall start then with a brief word about the trip itself and my
method of work.

of work, it was of the utmost importance to visit and move among the descendants of
emigrants. In this way research is built on the writer's own experience, which is a very
necessary feature of cultural anthropological research.
In three months I visited all the major Slovene centres in South America with the
exception of Caracas in Venezuela (due to financial and transport difficulties): Buenos
Aires,
Chile (Chile) and Sao Paulo (Brazil). I conducted over

It often happened that after a journey of a thousand kilometres and a sleepless
night I had to be ready to follow events and make the most of opportunities, to talk with
concentration about the topics, and then in the evening note it all down in my journal.
Moving among the emigrants and communicating with them were considerably
easier this time since their situation, which at least to a certain extent is a specific one,
and their 'mentality' were already known to me. My knowledge of Spanish proved to be
extremely useful, if not essential. When looking for people to interview I generally met
with a good response. This was greatly helped by appearances on three Slovene radio
broadcasts.
The purpose of the trip was to move among second generation Slovene immi¬
grants

preservation of a Slovene identity, acquaint myself with the work done by cultural soci¬
eties in the field of identity, and to make contacts with the institutions that deal with
similar themes to the Institute for Emigration Studies in Ljubljana.
The work took place in very varied circumstances, since I tended towards con¬
tacts that were as informal as possible and adapted myself as much as I could, trying to
fit in with them and practising the established anthropological methodological approach
of Observation through participation'
I did not record conversations during lunch or dinner for example, or even at other times.
I experienced communication difficulties with certain interviewees because of the fact
that I myself was from (formerly Communist and to some still hostile) Slovenia. Many
were bothered by my making occasional notes in my notebook, and even people used to
making public appearances were slightly uncomfortable at the sight of a microphone.
For the sake of relaxed and open conversations about what are very personal and, for
some, intimate issues, I chose for the most part to use
tant observations from individual conversations.
I asked the people I spoke with about the following:

Visits to people's homes were particularly helpful, since this enabled me to get a
more complete picture of my interviewees.
I met an extremely varied group of people, from intellectuals to semi-qualified
labourers, from the extremely wealthy to those on the margins of society, from children
to people in their nineties (the latter belong to the first generation but their testimonies
were in any case extremely useful), from those who were apolitical to those who were
extremely politically involved, from fluent Slovene speakers to those who did not even
know a word of Slovene. The conversations took place either one-to-one or over a meal
with a whole family or entire group, in Slovene, Spanish and also English.
It is worth stressing that I was quite unable to find any of those people who are
completely assimilated and no longer have any kind of contact with Slovenes, since
because of their lack of response no trace of them remains. In proportional terms they are
the largest group, especially among those who emigrated before the war or formed part
of the first wave of immigrants in South America at the turn of the century.
I did not get involved in collecting archive material on the arrival of the Slovenes,
or in trying to establish numbers, since they immigrated in different periods as citizens

of different countries (Austro-Hungary, Italy, Yugoslavia), many of them had Italianised
surnames, and immigrants arriving in different countries were only asked about their
nationality or mother tongue for brief periods or not at all. Nowhere is it possible to find
in the archives a column headed 'Immigrants from Slovenia', and a search through all
the immigrants from Italy, Austro-Hungary or Yugoslavia would have to focus on sepa¬
rating out Slovene surnames (and even that is not always reliable).
Over the course of my stay, in addition to conversations with individuals, fami¬
lies and groups, and the representatives of Slovene institutions in Argentina, I attended
several Slovene masses and social and cultural events for immigrants.
The book begins with an explanation of the methodology employed and a theo¬
retical explanation of key terms. 'Identity', 'socialisation', 'acculturation', etc. are com¬
paratively well-known expressions but deeper definitions are essential to give the work
as solid a construction as possible, and to enable proper understanding of the text that
follows. The second section has a somewhat historical aspect. It describes the settlement
of Slovenes in South America, their social organisation, and then in each category sepa¬
rately arrives at present conditions. In Argentina it describes in detail Slovene societies
or communities of emigrants from the period between the wars
and
and political emigration in Buenos Aires; there is a similar description of the Prekmurian
community in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the emigrant community in Brazil, particu¬
larly in Sao Paulo. The section also touches on the smaller number of Slovenes in Chile.
Particular attention is given to the descendants of settlers between the wars who are
resisting the disappearance of their ethnic identity, and to the descendants of political
emigrants who were forced to leave their homeland immediately after the war. Between
six and seven thousand emigrants came to Argentina, and in fifty years this community
has managed to preserve an extremely high level of Slovene identity, including an al¬
most faultless knowledge of Slovene, a highly developed social and cultural life, educa¬
tion and upbringing, etc., in which an important role has been played by the powerful
presence of the Slovene Catholic Church, or rather Slovene priests who arrived along
with the other refugees. While acknowledging absolutely the successes in the preserva¬
tion of Sloveneness, the text in this section is also critical at times, especially where it
identifies the conflict situations which appear at the level of the relationship of the indi¬
vidual to such a relatively solidly built community with its own (informal) rules.
The third chapter is what makes the work different, unique, innovative and au¬
tonomous, since it is almost entirely the result of my own conclusions and inferences. It
establishes connections between individual facts, forwards new observations and on this
basis embarks on a formulating of models and making predictions of processes in the
future. It establishes that among the first generation the Slovene identity is almost intact,
since the primary and often the second socialisation took place in the primary culture,
that is, in Slovenia. Even if conscious behaviour is apparently 'non-Slovene', subcon¬
sciously conditioned actions are typically 'Slovene'.
The situation is different with the descendants of emigrants, who are usually sub¬
ject to dual socialisation: to the influence of the primary culture of their parents in the
family circle, and the pressures of the dominant majority culture in the street, among

their peers, at school, via the mass media, etc. This is particularly true of children in
families where both parents are Slovenes. The individual thus finds himself in a situation
which in most cases could be described as a 'dual identity'
culture is significantly stronger in the case of mixed marriages; in every case the major¬
ity culture has the advantage since it is 'tangible', the individual lives and works in it
every day, while the primary culture of the parents is for the growing person imaginary,
'semi-real', and does not belong to the real world of everyday existence. This is the
reason that so much more effort is needed to preserve a high level of Slovene ethnic
affiliation among the descendants of emigrants. These efforts in any case do not neces¬
sarily lead to the desired results, and can even have the opposite effect
from this culture.
The preservation of the ethnic identity of one's forebears is influenced by the
possibility of motivation for self-preservation. This on the other hand is the consequence
of the (various) causes of emigration, distance from the mother country, the difference of
the immigrant culture and the positive attitude to socio-political conditions in the mother
country. Ethnic identity is preserved in the family, in emigrants' societies and their insti¬
tutions and in ethnic religious institutions. It is preserved by preserving customs, typical
food, music and dance, cultivating the political tradition, preserving and cultivating the
mother tongue of the parents, typical symbols, historical memory, via cultural activity,
and so on. This model is followed by an attempt to design a moving qualitative scale of
the level of feeling of ethnic identity among the descendants of Slovene emigrants. There
are nine of these levels, although none of them implies a moral evaluation. They merely
attempt to show characteristic forms, with the supposition that each of them is the most
that the individual is capable of in a given social context or set of circumstances. The
levels range from the 'identification identity', which includes the largest section of the
overall population of 'people of Slovene origin' (simply knowing about the origin of
their ancestors), via the 'mobilisation' identity (this brings individuals to active coopera¬
tion in Slovene societies or to other forms of this type of activity), to the rare, subcon¬
scious use of the (Slovene) mother tongue and in the final phase even a decision to move
back to the original homeland. There are currently more than a hundred such people in
Slovenia.
The journal of the trip contains daily observations based on unstructured conver¬
sations, meetings or mere interaction with Slovene emigrants during my three-month
stay in South America. They are complemented by letters, articles and interviews (or just
extracts from them) on ethnic identity among the target population. These are further
complemented by the exceptionally valuable letters of members of different generations
from different continents on the theme of the preservation of (Slovene) identity or its
duality. These compositions give the book something of the flavour of an anthology,
since the reader has the opportunity to compare the author's observations with the reflec¬
tions that have arisen in different situations, on different continents, among the people to
whom these issues actually relate.

.Estos son los fundamentales interrogantes conceptuales, formulados en la in¬
troducción de la obra, en torno a los cuales gira el presente texto. La conciencia nacional
es considerada una parte relevante de la identidad personal, que adquiere una expresión
aún mayor en una situación de expatriación. Esto lo siente en primer lugar el emigrante
mismo, luego sus descendientes, quienes casi necesariamente terminan encontrándose
atenazados por una doble socialización. La »nueva« cultura no es para ellos nueva, sino
la única
de lo esloveno a los descendientes, ésta no puede superar la lejanía física, lo inasible, lo
imaginario, mejor dicho, lo »novelesco« de aquella cultura específica llamada Eslove-
nia; falta la experiencia de la pertenencia territorial, demasiado fuerte es la presencia del
entorno mayoritario y »palpable«. ¿En qué forma es posible una identidad nacional eslo¬
vena en aquellos que crecieron en un entorno diferente, en este caso en un entorno suda¬
mericano? Ésta es la pregunta fundamental y, a la vez, el propósito del presente trabajo.
Describir, aclarar, pronosticar y, con ello, responder.
El tema propuesto no es de ningún modo tan sencillo como parece ser sencilla la
pregunta misma. Fue necesario mucho conocimiento previo y el conocimiento de la
población objeto, una enorme cantidad de energía para la realización del trabajo clave
el viaje de estudio, la empatia y la concentración para la comprensión y el análisis de los
mensajes y, por supuesto, el tiempo

El problema de la emigración en general fue tratado con frecuencia en la literatu¬
ra eslovena y extranjera, pero en gran medida se trata de elaboraciones históricas, a
veces también sociológicas o psicológicas sobre de los emigrantes. El presente texto
elabora la problemática de la conservación de la identidad nacional desde el punto de

El tema exige un trabajo interdisciplinario, una combinación de los resultados y
de la metodología de trabajo de la antropología cultural, la psicología social, la socio¬
logía y la historia. Ésta última es importante para la comprensión del presente (con el
que esta en relación este trabajo), la psicología social y la sociología aportan la base
teórica para la comprensión del acontecer y de las relaciones entre el individuo y el
medio, y de los procesos sociales que influyen en aquellos, mientras que la antropología
cultural (en cuyo campo se desenvuelve este trabajo) le confiere a todo ello concreción,
practicidad, vida. Esta última orienta todas estas ramas del conocimiento hacia la meta
propuesta y las acota de tal modo que una

experiencia personal del autor, lo que es absolutamente necesario para una investigación
antropológica cultural.
En tres meses visité todos los grandes centros eslovenos, a excepción de Caracas
en Venezuela (dificultades económicas y técnicas, mejor dicho, de transporte): Buenos
Aires, Mendoza,
Chile (Chile) y Sao Paulo (Brasil). Realicé más de
la convivencia misma con los emigrantes, mejor dicho, sus descendientes, me interioricé
con la labor de alrededor de

la emigración y la identidad.
Debido a las grandes distancias entre las ciudades, el viaje fue agotador tanto
psíquica como físicamente, ya que en ómnibus o en automóvil consumí exactamente
horas, durante las cuales recorrí

por ejemplo, después de mil kilómetros de viaje y una noche en vela debí estar atento a
los acontecimientos y las oportunidades, dialogar atentamente sobre el tema propuesto y
a la noche incluso registrar todo ello en mi diario.
El trato con los emigrantes y la comunicación con ellos fue esta vez notablemente
más fácil, dado que su situación específica y su mentalidad me eran
cierto punto

generación de emigrantes eslovenos

aquellas instituciones que se dedican a una temática similar, como lo es el Instituto para
el Estudio de las Emigraciones
Mi labor se fue desarrollando en circunstancias muy variadas, pues traté de estab¬
lecer contactos que fueran lo más informales posible y, por ello, me fui adaptando en
grado máximo, traté de llegar a ser parte de ellos, practicar el concepto metodológico
predominante de la antropología cultural »observación con participación«. Es por esta
razón que, por ejemplo, los diálogos que se llevaron a cabo durante almuerzos o cenas, y
también otros, en su mayoría no fueron grabados. Con algunos de mis interlocutores
tuve al comienzo algunas dificultades en la comunicación por el hecho mismo de venir
de Eslovenia (anteriormente un país comunista y para algunos aún hoy en día un país
enemigo), para algunos era molesto de que periódicamente anotara mis reflexiones en
una libreta, la grabación incomodó incluso a aquellos que estaban acostumbrados a ac¬
tuar en público. A fin de lograr un diálogo distendido y abierto acerca de temas muy
personales y, para algunas personas, íntimos, me dediqué en general a llevar un diario
personal de las observaciones más importantes de cada diálogo.
Mis interlocutores respondieron a preguntas que se referían a

hogar, cómo era la relación del medio con su »eslovenidad«, cómo habían vivido
durante su infancia el proceso de la doble inculturación,

eslovena, el idioma, a los amigos.

Especialmente positivas fueron las visitas a los hogares, pues de ese modo la
imagen de mi interlocutor era más acabada.
Mis encuentros fueron con una población
lectuales hasta obreros semicalifícados, desde gente muy pudiente hasta personas
mente
mera generación, pero sus testimonios fueron igualmente muy bienvenidos), desde gen¬
te apolítica hasta personas en extremo politizadas, desde individuos que hablaban fluida¬
mente el idioma esloveno hasta aquellos que no sabían ni una sola palabra de esloveno.
Las entrevistas se desarrollaron en privado o en ocasión de la comida con toda la familia,
con todo el grupo, en esloveno, español y también en inglés.
Debo recalcar que sencillamente no pude localizar a aquellos que se han asimila¬
do totalmente y no mantienen contacto alguno con lo esloveno, dado que, por su falta de

interes, se
numeroso, especialmente entre los pertenecientes a los emigrantes de preguerra y a la
primer ola de emigrantes en Sudamérica al final del siglo.
Durante mi trabajo no me dediqué a la recopilación de datos de archivo concer¬
nientes a la llegada de los eslovenos, ni a la estimación de su número, dado que fueron
afluyendo en distintos períodos como ciudadanos de distintos países (Imperio austro-
húngaro, Italia, Yugoslavia), un número elevado de ellos poseían apellidos italianizados.
Sólo en ciertas épocas o quizás nunca se les interrogó sobre su nacionalidad o su lengua
materna al arribar a los distintos países. Es por ello que en los archivos nos es posible
encontrar una categoría específica »inmigrantes de Eslovenia« y la búsqueda entre los
inmigrantes de Italia, del Imperio austro-húngaro o de Yugoslavia debería estar centrada
en la identificación basada en los apellidos (más o menos inciertamente eslovenos.)
Además de realizar distintas charlas con individuos particulares, familias grupos
y representantes de instituciones eslovenas en Argentina, durante los tres meses que
duró mi estadía participé en varias misas eslovenas y distintos actos sociales y culturales
de los emigrantes.
Mi texto comienza con una aclaración de la metodología de trabajo y la explica¬
ción teórica de los conceptos claves. »Identidad«, »socialización«, »aculturación«, etc.,
son expresiones medianamente conocidas, pero algunas definiciones profundas son la
base necesaria para una construcción del tarabajo lo más firme posible y para una com¬
prensión correcta de lo que sigue. La segunda parte
describe la afluencia de los eslovenos a Sudamérica, su organización institucional, pa¬
sando en cada categoría a la situación actual. Así se describen con cierto detalle las
asociaciones eslovenas, o sea, las colectividades de emigrantes del período de entreguer-
ras
rio, los eslovenos de Prekmurje en Buenos Aires) y los emigrantes políticos en Buenos
Aires, Bariloche
de los eslovenos de Prekmurje en Montevideo (Uruguay), como asimismo las colectivi¬
dades de emigrantes en Brasil, ante todo en Sao Paulo, a la vez que se hace mención de
la presencia menor de los eslovenos en Chile. Una atención especial se ha dedicado a los
descendientes de los emigrantes de entreguerras que luchan con la desaparición de su
identidad étnica eslovena, y a los descendientes de los emigrantes políticos que se vieron
obligados a abandonar su patria al finalizar la guerra. A Argentina arribaron
de estos últimos y en cincuenta años esta comunidad ha logrado conservar un nivel
excepcionalmente
fecto del idioma esloveno, con su propia vida institucional y cultural, su propia educa¬
ción
presencia de la Iglesia católica eslovena, mejor dicho, de los sacerdotes eslovenos que
llegaron con los demás emigrantes. Junto al reconocimiento total de los éxitos en la
conservación de lo esloveno, el texto es en esta parte por momentos también crítico,
especialmente cuando constata las situaciones conflictivas que aparecen a nivel de la
relación del individuo con una comunidad con sus reglas (no formales) construida de
una manera relativamente rígida.
El tercer capítulo es el que le confiere al trabajo su diferencia distintiva, unicidad,

y reflexiones personales. Constata conexiones entre los hechos particulares, aporta nue¬
vas observaciones y sobre esta base se encamina también a la elaboración de modelos y
la anticipación de procesos futuros. Para la primera generación comprueba que la identi¬
dad eslovena ha quedado intacta, ya que la socialización primaria y, en parte, a menudo
también la secundaria se llevó a cabo en la cultura primaria, o sea, en Eslo venia. Incluso
en el caso en que su comportamiento

En los descendientes de emigrantes, comúnmente sujetos a una doble socializa¬
ción, el proceso es distinto: bajo la influencia de la cultura primaria de los padres en el
círculo familiar y la presión de la cultura mayoritaria dominante en la calle, entre sus
pares, en la escuela, en los medios de comunicación, etc.

una situación que en la mayoría de los casos podríamos denominar »doble identidad«.
En los matrimonios de nacionalidad mixta la influencia de la cultura mayoritaria es esen¬
cialmente mayor. En todos los casos la cultura mayoritaria tiene preeminencia, ya que
ésta es »palpable«, el individuo vive, opera diariamente en ella, mientras que la cultura
primaria de los padres es para el joven imaginaria,
real cotidiano. Es por ello que para la conservación de un alto nivel de pertenencia étnica
eslovena se hace necesario para los descendientes de los emigrantes un esfuerzo mucho
mayor, el que de todos modos a menudo no da frutos, mejor dicho, puede producir inlcu-
so el efecto contrario
En la conservación de la identidad étnica de los predecesores influye la posibili¬
dad de una motivación para la conservación misma, siendo ésta consecuencia de: (distin¬
tas) causas del exilio, lejanía de la madre patria, la diferencia de la cultura de los emi¬
grantes, una relación positiva con respecto a la situación político-social en la madre
patria. La identidad étnica se conserva en la familia, en las asociaciones de los emigran¬
tes y en sus instituciones, en las instituciones étnicas religiosas, y todo ello a través de la
conservación de las costumbres, comidas típicas, música y danza, el mantenimiento de
la tradición política, la conservación y el mantenimiento del idioma materno de los pa¬
dres, de los símbolos típicos, de la memoria histórica, con la creación cultural, etc. A
continuación de este modelo sigue el intento de elaboración de una escala cualitativa
móvil del nivel de sentimiento de identidad étnica en los descendientes de emigrantes
eslovenos. Hay nueve niveles, pero ninguno de ellos implica una valoración moral, sino
que sólo intenta mostrar formas características, con el presupuesto de que cada nivel es
lo máximo que un individuo puede alcanzar en un cierto contexto social, o sea, en el
entramado de ciertas circunstancias. Los distintos niveles abarcan desde una »identidad
identificacional«, a la que pertenece la parte mayoritaria de la población total de »perso¬
nas de ascendencia eslovena« (el sólo conocimiento del origen de los predecesores),
pasando por la identidad »movilizadora« (ésta lleva a los individuos a participar activa¬
mente en las asociaciones eslovenas o a otras formas de actividad de este tipo), hasta el
uso habitual, inconciente del idioma materno (esloveno) y en la fase última incluso a la
decisión de establecerse en la patria original

Abstract
The book represents a continuation of the study of the question of the preserva¬
tion of ethnic identity among Slovene emigrants which I began seven years ago as a
student of journalism. The bulk of the text is based on my master's thesis on cultural
anthropology.
The work deals with the issues of the preservation of a (Slovene) ethnic identity
among the members of the second (and third) generation of Slovene emigrants in South
America, especially in Argentina, which was the destination of the majority of emigrat¬
ing Slovenes.
The text begins with a look at some basic theoretical points relating to the
inculturation process; greatest attention is paid to the revival of knowledge about group
identity, political identity and other forms of identity, the difference between the terms
culture, ethnicity, nationality and nation, the connection between socialisation and the
forming of ethnic identity, and a clarification of the concepts of acculturation and as¬
similation.
After tying the theoretical concept of acculturation to the more concrete example
of emigration, and following a brief historical introduction, I give a description of cur¬
rent situations in the individual countries where Slovene emigrants or their descendants
now live. The chapter, which is descriptive in nature, pays most attention to Slovenes in
Argentina. It begins with a short description of the three main (historically conditioned)
'waves' of emigration, and then passes on to a description of individual communities. It
begins with prewar emigrants and analyses in some detail conditions among postwar
political emigrants or their descendants. This part of the text already represents a shift
from bare description to commentary and analysis, particularly in relation to the causes
and energy behind the continued organised preservation of ethnic identity in this com¬
munity and the problem of the duality of socialisation among the descendants of emi¬
grants.
The description also makes use of empirical/historical data on, for example, the
causes and methods of emigration, the establishing of societies, and conditions then and
now in Argentina and other countries (Chile, Uruguay, Brazil), on which basis it is pos¬
sible to conduct a qualitative discussion of the present and future.
There then follows a short chapter containing a comparison with emigration from
Lithuania to South America.
The third part of the book is analytical and very much my own work. It summa¬
rises observations made during a three-month study visit to South America, and com¬
pares them with those made seven and two years ago, during my first and second stays
among this group of people. It notes the main characteristics of the members of the first

generation, in other words emigrants who experienced their primary socialisation within
the primary (Slovene) society. The chapter mainly serves as an introduction to the analy¬
sis of the second generation, after which I create my own model of the presentation of
ethnic identity among emigrants. This illustrates the factors which have an influence on
the preservation of ethnic identity (motivation, differences in the reasons for emigration,
the difference of the immigrant culture, a positive attitude towards conditions in the
'mother country', etc.), the mediums via which this is preserved (the family, societies,
religious institutions), and phenomena such as cultural creativity, language, customs,
political tradition, food, etc.
The text also touches on the issue from a slightly different point of view and
formulates qualitative levels for the perception of ethnic identity which it then arranges
on a movable scale: from extreme non-connection with the culture of one's immigrant
parents, to the other extreme
point has been largely imaginary. This last group is particularly interesting because of its
unique process of re-inculturation into a society which the individuals concerned have
perhaps never seen with their own eyes.

even the most sensitive topics such as the encroachment of assimilation even into the
ranks of the most persistent and till now 'intact' groups.
The main focus of the work is on two different examples of the preservation of
ethnic identity through the generations: prewar emigration, which follows a relatively
standard assimilation model, and postwar political emigration in Argentina, whose ac¬
culturation model is non-standard.
The discussion closes with a short commentary which looks at the future for
Slovene emigrants, which seems most feasible if the ideas of politics and language are
not emphasised, in other words if there is no policy of excluding those who think differ¬
ently (politically) and those who no longer speak Slovene.
Weight is lent to the work by an extensive supplement containing conversations,
diary entries and certain written accounts. I rely on these in particular in the analytical
part of the text. The book is given special weight by the letters from members of various
generations of Slovene emigrants from various continents
and reflections with the help of which the reader is able to compare the author's own
observations from South America with those written from other points of view.
