THE HERITAGE AND THE PRESENT
SUMMARY
The study Citizens of Kamnik Between the Heritage and the
Present unveils the different levels of Kamnik s cultural image. It
first presents the town of Kamnik as a community and searches for
the elements which linked the residents of Kamnik into an entity
apart from its surroundings. Already at this level, at the level of the
town and its laws, some differences between town residents are
evident.
The study of Kamnik s cultural image brings these differen¬
ces into sharp focus. In the research this image is highlighted
through the prism of the conflict between tradition-bound burg¬
hers and town residents open to changes, in other words through
the conflict between the remnants of the feudal system and capita¬
lism. Of all the differences between town residents

and its old and new suburbs), this conflict is perceived to be the
key one. It is a clash between cultural traditionalism and dyna¬
mism, expressed in concrete everyday situations by interlacing of
social and professional connections. Consequently, town-dwellers
can only be properly defined through comprehension of the cultu¬

According to the unwritten law of tradition and progress,
town residents, both burghers and cosmopolitans, belonged to a
better class of people. Though there were distinctions between
members of the better class, they shared a common consciou¬
sness which included a feeling of responsibility for the town s
good . This differentiation had a strong impact on Kamnik s cultu¬
ral image, which was felt at the end of the 19th centuiy, when
Kamnik, thanks to tourism, industry and the general atmosphere
which ranked national goals above local and town interest, ope¬
ned up to the world while seeking to retain its old rights.
While walking up and down the ladder of cultural levels,
one can observe the gap between burghers and cosmopolitans in
everyday life and during holidays
interaction between them. Burgherhood is seen here more as a
loyalty to old guild tradition rather than the possession of material

privileges proper to the owners of the so-called burgher houses,
organized into the Town Corporation, a key distinctive feature of
the town of Kamnik. The study records different attitudes towards
the past, ranging from the struggle to earn one s daily bread to the
experience of the spiritual aspects of life.
In the time between World War I and World War II circum¬
stances changed, giving a new meaning to the relationship bet¬
ween tradition and progress. It became apparent that the urban
world, though tacitly or publicly pledged to change, was still stab¬
le, united by the values of work, money-making and property.
Both poles, the burghers and the cosmopolitans, were not only
bound by their belonging to the Town Corporation but also by
their allegiance to civic values.
While one pattern of behavior was losing ground, another
one was gaining power and status, giving rise to a new pattern
questioning the right to work and profit, erasing the boundaiy
between town, suburbs and outlying areas. Together with the old
and new relationships between people, issues both particular to
each human being and common to mankind in general, which
transcend time, space and social conventions, were gaining ground.
All this sheds light on a world both close and faraway, chal¬
lenging the limits of perception and cognition. Beneath the diffe¬
rences between ethnology and anthropology, one senses a deeper
issue, the issue of existential dimension. The symbolism of a thres¬
hold, which in the beginning of the study illustrates the boundary
between the private and the public and the old and the modern
world, at the end, enriched by life s wisdoms, gains an unspoken
and only hinted at existential dimension.
