Schools and Studies of the Polish Dominican
Friars in the Middle Ages,
Poznań, Instytut Historii,
2005,

Summary
The book deals with the education of the Polish Dominican friars in the Middle
Ages and consists of an introduction, four chapters, a conclusion and an extensive
annex.
Various types of sources are presented as well, such as in the first chapter, the
state of research on the medieval Dominican education system in the Polish lands.
The author broadly described the written documents referring to Dominican
чпе-
dieval schools, particularly to numerous manuscripts preserved in ecclesiastical
and state archives, libraries and other institutions. He also paid attention to the
surviving acts of the Polish Dominican provincial chapter. However, the limited
number of original medieval documents and records of the Dominican chapter s
proceedings certainly make the research more difficult. The list of these often
damaged or fragmentary acts makes the reconstruction of the medieval Dominican
education system (since the 13th to 15th cent.) sometimes problematic. The author
critically discussed the state of research on the intellectual history of the Polish
Dominicans, pointing out some less known or almost unknown aspects of these
studies to the historians.
The second chapter was dedicated to presenting the conventual schools run by
the Polish Dominicans from the 13th to 15th cent. The author successfully de¬
scribed novitiate, Latin grammar schools as well as the organization and activity of
theological studies in a single monastery. One can state that Polish Dominicans
followed the principles and orders expressed by the general chapters of the Domi¬
nican Order and it s constitution. On the other hand the superiors of the smaller
Dominican convent in the Polish lands often faced some difficulties to follow these
rules fully, because of a too small number of candidate-novices, lack of properly
educated instructors (so-called lectors) and sometimes too poor library collections
which limited the scholarly studies in a given monastery.
The third chapter was designed to present the beginnings and further existence
of the particular schools of atrium,
naturarum
and theology within the framework
of
studium
particulare.
The author also described some very interesting traces
which could indicate the existence of special types of schools, offering instruction
in music and languages. The activity of the particular schools among the Polish
Dominicans was presented against the background of much broader, European
contexts, thanks to the analysis of surviving documents (including provincial
chapter s records or their fragments), composed by the Dominicans in Spain, Italy,

Summary
Germany and France. After having compared the Polish Dominicans with their
foreign confreres, the author finished this chapter with some conclusions:
1.
One
should correct the statements of the earlier historians who tended to date the
creation of the particular schools in the Polish lands as early as 1260s. In fact, the
establishment of particular schools, designed to instruct in arts, natural sciences
and theology, should be moved to 1280s. The final network of the particular school
emerged after the division of the original province into two new ones: Polish and
Bohemian which took place at the beginning of the 14th cent.;
2.
The number of
particular schools and their differentiation in the program of teaching used to be
clearly lesser, in comparison to other Western European Dominican provinces.
Even after several decades the Polish Dominicans did not succeed in establishing
the number of the particular schools, requested by the Order s superiors, who
insisted on the creation of at least some such schools in a provincial district, known
as
contrata,
consisting of some monasteries. It seems that, most probably, only in
Silesia and Lesser Poland
(Małopolska)
the number of particular schools was close
to the one requested. The other provinces, Greater Poland or Masovia, did not
reach the Order s standards. Generally, Dominicans were able to establish such
schools in a adequate number as late as beginning of the 15th cent.;
3.
One could
not find any clear evidence of a fully developed particular school, where Do¬
minicans could study foreign languages. This type of school was very popular in
other Dominican provinces, in particular in Spain;
4.
Some limited evidence was
found which proved the existence of a particular school where one could study
music and construction of musical instruments (organs);
5.
The real influence of
a particular school should be limited to a monastery, in which such a school was
located. Only a very limited number of the friars were able to study outside their
own monastery and particular school. It refers mainly to the monasteries where
there was no particular school and the young friars had to be sent to some other
places in order to complete their education;
6.
One can also notice some changes in
localization of particular schools over the decades of the 13th and 14th cent., but
basically they were located in the main twenty Dominican convents of the Polish
provinces, very rarely in small towns.
The fourth chapter deals with the higher theological studies of the Polish
Dominicans in the Middle Ages. The author reconstructed the process of creation
of the so-called
studium generale
of the Polish Dominican province as well as
travels to study abroad. After having analyzed the accessible sources regarding to
establishing of
studium generale,
one should reject the current existing concept
that such a study was already organized in Cracow in the 14th cent. It is difficult to
indicate the precise date of it s creation, but
studium generale
of the Polish Domi¬
nicans was organized as late as the beginning of the
1
5th cent. A similar study
program was established in
Greifswald in
the middle of the 15th cent., however it s
importance within the Dominican Order was much lesser that that of Cracow.
Besides the studies undertaken by the Polish Dominicans in Cracow, friars
sometimes traveled abroad. One could notice such study trips already in the 13th

cent. For many decades Polish Dominican province was not able to send abroad
the number of young friars requested by the general chapter of the Dominican
Order. The intensity of such study trips increased in the second half of the 14th
and, in particular, in 15th cent., when Polish Dominicans continued their studies at
the university in Prague and various others in Italy, France and Germany, less
frequently in England and Spain, which can be explained, primarily by the remote
distance from the Polish Dominican province.
The author added an annex to the analytical part of his book. It contains a short
life description of several hundred Polish Dominicans, who in the medieval sour¬
ces were described as students or instructors (lectors) and lived in Polish Domi¬
nicans convents.
