the backbone of any sound public health program, immu¬
nization on a large scale is often necessary to produce a
rapid decrease in endemic disease when a new vaccine
becomes available, or to respond to an epidemic of a
disease in a massive way. Moreover, historically vaccina¬
tion has always been both a matter of community as well
as individual protection, and mass immunization is the
fastest way to prevent disease in those who receive a
vaccine as well as in those who for any reason can not or
will not be vaccinated. If an effort is needed to block the
spread of an infectious agent as well as the disease that
it causes, mass immunization may also be the best tool.
In this volume the use of mass immunization is reviewed
from the point of view of the World Health Organization,
the United Kingdom and the US military. In addition,
specific examples are presented of mass immunization to
prevent diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, influenza, measles,
polio, rubella and smallpox. As mass immunization could
be facilitated by novel delivery methods, chapters are
also devoted to aerosol and
