substantially revised to update existing entries,
showcase superb new photography and introduce
recently acquired properties such as Greenway in
Devon, Red House in Kent, Tyntesfield in Somerset
and
new Head Gardener spreads highlighting the work
of some of the most dedicated and talented gardeners
in Britain.
Stephen Lacey paints a vivid picture of individual
Trust gardens through historical and horticultural
perspectives. All the major periods are represented,
from Renaissance pleasure grounds, Elizabethan
courts and grand seventeenth-century formality to
flowing landscape parks, swashbuckling Victorian
bedding schemes and the twentieth-century s rich
legacy of exotic woodlands and painterly, plant-
packed border schemes.
Gardens of the National Trust serves as a practical
guide as well as a source of inspiration. Each entry
gives details of soil and climate, while an appendix
includes many other gardens to visit and a complete
plant list. Glorious colour photography by the
country s leading photographers accompanies the
entries and brings the beauty of the gardens to life.
Stephen Lacey was educated at Shrewsbury School
and Trinity College, Oxford. After a short career as an
investment surveyor, he has become one of Britain s
best-known garden writers. His books include The
Startling jungle. Scent in Your Garden, and, most
recently, Real Gardening, and he is a long-standing
columnist and feature writer for the Daily Telegraph.
For ten years, he was a regular presenter on BBC
Television s Gardeners World. He now spends a large
part of every year travelling, garden visiting, and
lecturing on traditional and contemporary planting
design to
botanic gardens around the world.
