Soixante ans après qu'un médecin de l'arma1 rouge, à Iheresienstadi, i eut retenu
in txtreniis de franchir le seuil de la mort, Shelomo Selinger publie soixante des
dessins qu'il a consacrés aux camps de concentration : il n’invente pas ce qu’il
montre, il en a lui-même connu neuf. L’artiste est déjà un grand sculpteur, quand il
s'essaie au fusain ou à l'encre, quelque vingt ans après ses débuts au marteau. Si,
comme Goya, Selinger est loin d’être seulement un artiste des horreurs de la guerre,
c'est peut-être quand il décrit par le trait ce qu’il a vécu qu'on perçoit le mieux
sa main de grand maître : ces dessins sont certes des témoignages terribles de
'impensable atrocité que fut la Shoah, ce sont aussi autant de chefs-d'uvre de
'art de la seconde moitié du xx՜ siècle.
Sixty years after a Red Army doctor snatched him from the jaws of death at
Theresienstadt, Shelomo Selinger unveils sixty drawings upon his own concentra-
tion camp experience. Needless to say that nothing he draws is made up, as he has
himself been an inmate in nine different camps. The artist had already established
himself as a fine sculptor when, some twenty years after taking up the chisel, he
started working with charcoal and ink. If, like Goya, Selinger is more than an artist
of the horrors of war, it is perhaps when he uses line to describe what he lived
through that we are most aware of his great mastery. These drawings are terrible
testimony to the unthinkable atrocity of the Shoah. They are also masterpieces from
the art of the second half of the twentieth century. |
