Summary
Materials received during the excavations of the barrows in the Slobodzeia re¬
gion of the Republic of Moldova introduce the burial complexes of a number of
nomadic cultures that cover the chronological span from the Eneolithic period to
the Late Middle Ages.
The Eneolithic period is represented by three horizons: the Pre-Usatovsky ho¬
rizon (corresponded to the monuments of the Nizhnemikhailovsky and the Zhivoti-
lovsky types), the horizon of the burials of the Postmariupolsky type, and the Usa-
tovsky horizon.
The Early Bronze Age. The Yamnaya culture is represented by three groups:
the early Yamnaya (or the old Yamnaya) burials, the Yamnaya burials of the de¬
veloped or so-called Gorodtsovsky variant, and the burials of the late Yamnaya
period. On the whole the excavated complexes are typical and have the numerous
parallels in the complexes of the northwestern Black Sea area, but some particular
features of the burial constructions are unique, for example, in the kurgan
Yamnaya culture.
The complexes of the Catacomb Grave culture in general are similar to the
contemporary ones known from the Lower Dnieper river region. Meanwhile there
is a notable burial from the kurgan
related to the various aspects of the household activities.
The Middle Bronze Age is characterized by the outstanding and original burials
of the Mnogovalikovaya culture with unique burial constructions. They are accom¬
panied by a set of tools common for this culture throughout the area.
The Late Bronze Age is represented by a number of burials with the sets of
tools and the burial rite of the classical Sabatinovka culture. It gives a possibility to
analyze the Late Bronze Age burials of the
the criteria chosen for the Sabatinovka monuments of the Left
gion, to more precisely define their cultural attribution.
The Early Iron Age is represented by one pre-Skythian burial and notable
Skythian burials. The excavated Skythian burials include graves as ordinary mem¬
bers of the society as well as graves of the noblemen with all characteristic attributes.
It is worth noting that in the Lower
Scythian world, funeral rites, traditions and the sets of tools do not differ from those
of the classical Scythian area of the Dnieper river region. Also should be noted the
presence of a large number of the Scythian complexes typical for the forest-steppe

Materials received during the excavations of the barrows in the Slobodzeia re¬
gion of the Republic of Moldova introduce the burial complexes of a number of
