Although children s literature blossomed in England dur¬
ing the late Victorian period, young adult or YA litera¬
ture came of age in the twentieth century. YA is sepa¬
rate and distinct from literature that is written for children, just
as its readership is drawn from a separate segment of society,
defined and named with the advent of teen culture in the
1
930s.
Now it is clear that the teen years are a special time of struggle
-
to become an adult, to establish an identity, to belong, to fit
in with peer groups, and to assume personal independence.
Teens want to read about teens, usually a few years older, cop¬
ing with and overcoming problems similar to the ones that they
face. With the dawn of the twenty-first century, teens have
access
tò
works that are increasingly mature, dealing with
themes such as sexual identity, the break up of the family, and
death.
The Continuum Encyclopedia of Young Adult Literature is
the only reference guide to the brave new world of YA litera¬
ture. It consists of some
1,000
(mostly) signed articles by
180
contributors. Among the authors, educators, graphic artists, and
publishing professionals written about in this book are Douglas
