SUMMARY
The book, Villages of
Arges
Certified between
1300
and
1625.
History
and Etymology, came from the research achieved by us, considering both the
existing historical and geographical information as well as by the documen¬
tation on the spot, with the objective of knowing the most accurate, official
forms of toponyms, in order to select the geographical names and those of the
localities in
Argeş
County. This extensive research was born out of the desire to
explain and argue many of the meanings of the different place names in
Argeş.

he analysis and research of the works dedicated to the place names gave
us the possibility to be able to see the inexpressible value of'thesefragments of
language and, by the information we collected and explained, we try to clear
the frequent questions about the toponymy of
Argeş
County.
Overall, the undertaken toponymy research highlighted the variety of
problems that are required by the analysis and interpretation of place names.
Most often, researchers (historians, linguists, geographers) achieved them
according to the scientific field each of them practiced, hence the different
opinions on the historical significance of the toponymy that should be
considered in terms of the origin of the word which is the basis of the toponym.

followed, naturally, by the Conclusions and Bibliography.
In the first chapter, entitled The history of toponomastic research, we
presented the most important Romanian linguists, historians and geographers in

the second half of the XlXth century to the present day with their main papers,
emphasizing their individual contribution to clear the issue on the structure and
origin of Romanian place names.
In the chapters
2, 3, 4
and
5
we presented and analyzed the place names of
Argeş
-
the oiconyms
-
certified within the period
1300-1625.
Our major
concern was, that in discussing and analyzing the vast majority of toponyms,
citing the opinions of specialists on the etymology of the respective names, to
state also our opinion, which does not always agree with theirs.
We searched the documents relating to the certification of villages, in
order to find their graphic form at the time of their appearance and the phonetic
evolution of some place names, concluding that, mostly, oiconyms have kept
their form until today, which shows that they occurred long before their being
recorded in specialized documents, being quite known and well-established in
the catalog of geographical names in Wallachia during the medieval period.
In the research of the documents related to the names of villages certified
between
1300
and
1625,
we also followed the names of persons present in the
documents issued at the respective time, since most oiconyms are derived with
suffixes, out of which the suffix that starts from nouns,
-eşti,
is predominant
and, rallying our views to
Al.
I.
Graur
and I
Pătruţ,
we consider that "Villages
were often named after the name of their founder, followed by the suffix
-estľ.
After our analysis, we found that approx.
40%
are formed with the suffix
-
eşti
from personal names, some names being recorded in specialized documents
with nearly a century before the names of villages, which makes us agree with
Al. Graur's
scientific opinion (see above) that is pertinent and well reasoned.
Some of the names of persons no longer exist nowadays in Romanian onomas-
tics, but they existed in the past, reason why we believe that the research of
place names should be closely related to the research of antroponymy.
In a percentage of approx.
20%,
oiconyms are derived from other toponyms
or anthroponyms with the suffix -eni
{-ani),
whereas the other suffixes have a
much lower share in the derivational toponymy system.
As such, I followed the derivative and non-derivative homophonic topo¬
nyms certified in other counties from Wallachia during the same period, in
order to know the structure of
Argeş
toponymy.

the Vlth chapter, The Structure of
Argeş
Toponyms. Formation of
Toponyms, we analyzed the toponyms collected in the field and organized

(structured) them accoding to the number of elements involved in their
formation, distinguishing two main categories of
toponymie
structures: simple
and analytical ioponyms.
In the the Vllth chapter,
Argeş
Toponym. History and Etymology, after the
undertaken research, we found that the old name
Argeş
was first certified in the
medieval documents as a toponym or hydronym in Transylvania, Wallachia and
Moldavia. The etymology of this word has been very much debated for more
than a century, most linguists and historians connecting it with the ancient
Thracian Argessis or Argissis. From the ancient Thracian form,
Argeş
derives
nowadays.
In the chapter
Măţău
Toponym. Origin and Significance, we undertook a
thorough analysis of it, based on existing documents. I found that it appeared in
the XVI-th century, but some evidence shows that it would have existed ever
since Vlad
Tepes
time. Linguists such as,
N.
Dräganu, C.
Diculescu,
Şt.
Pasca,
Sextil
Puşcariu
and the historian
N.
Constantinescu, were very interested in the
etimology of the respective word.
N.
Drăganu's
hypothesis according to which
the word is of Slavic origin, after having been assimilated by Romanians
through a Hungarian branch, with the meaning of "a village of a bear", seems
plausible to us, the name of the toponym
Meţova
being identified by Sextil
Puşcariu
with the Romanians of Pind.
As a working hypothesis, in analyzing and structuring the toponymy in
Argeş,
this paper is not tributary to other similar ones, because
Argeş
has its
ancient millenary existence and it was necessary both to point out the results of
archaeological research done in this region in the last century and to emphasize
the documents where the first
Argeş
names were certified.
Therefore, we express our conviction that, our attempt should represent a
stimulus for further research in the toponymy in
Arges,
which will highlight
new elements and aspects, which added to our analysis and results should bring
additional items, and even add
-
there wherever possible
-
also other points of
view.

Das Buch,
Satele argeşene atestate între
1300
şi
1625.
Istorie şi etimologie,
ist das Ergebnis eingehender Forschungen, wo wir sowhohl historische als auch
geographische Informationen analysiert haben und eine persönliche
Dokumentation vor Ort vorgenommen , um die genaue offiziellen Formen der
Toponymen zu erkennen und die Bezeichnungen der geographischen Gebieten
und der Ortschaften des Arges Bezirkes zu selektieren. Diese umfangreiche
Forschung entstand aus dem Wunsch viele von den verschiedenen Bedeutungen
der Ortsnamen im Arges Bezirk zu erklären und zu argumentieren.
Die durchgeführte Analyse und die Untersuchung, die den Ortsnamen
gewidmet sind, hat uns erlaubt, die unaussprechliche Wert dieser Fragmente
der Sprache zu bemerken. Mit den gesammelten und von uns erklärten
Informationen versuchen wir, die häufigen Fragen über die
Toponymie
der
Arges Bezirk zu beantworten.
Im Allgemeinem haben die Untersuchungen in dem Gebiet der
Toponymie
gezeigt, wie wichtig und vielfaltig eine Analyse und Interpretation der
Ortsnamen sind.
In den meisten Fällen haben die Forscher (Historiker, Linguisten,
Geogrpahiker) all diese bemerkt und jeder hat seine Meinung formuliert, so daß
wir heute verschiedene Bedeutungen und Interpretationen der
Historik
der
Toponymie
haben.

In dem ersten Kapitel, Die
Historik
der Untersuchungen in dem Gebiet der
Toponymie
betitelt, haben wir die wichtigsten rumänischen Linguisten,
Historiker und Geographiker seit dem zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrunderts bis
heutzutage präsentiert und ihre Arbeiten und Beiträge an die Struktur und
Herkunft der rumänischen Ortsnamen.
Die nächsten Kapitel (Kapitel 2,3,4 und 5) fassen eine Analyse der
Ortsnamen im Kreis Arges zusammen. Diese sind als Oyconyme bekannt und
wurden zwischen 1300-1625 bestätigt. Wir haben uns mit den meisten
Toponymen beschäftigt, die Theorie verschiedener linguistischen Spezialiste
präsentiert und unsere eigene Schlussfolgerung ausgedruckt, die nicht immer
die gleiche mit den schon formulierten ist.
Erstens haben wir uns über die graphische Form der Dörfer aus den alten
historischen Manuskripten dokumentiert, und die phonetische Entwicklung
einiger toponymischen Namen studiert. Als Schlussfolgerung haben wir
gezeigt,
dass
die Oyconyme ihre erste Form aufbewahrt haben. Das ¡st ein
Nachweis für ihre Entstehung lang bevor ihrer Hinterlegung in den
linguistischen Werke. Diese waren sehr bekannt und familiär im Katalog der
geographischen Namen aus mitelalterlicher Walachei.
Bei der Forschung der Dokumenten über die Namen der nachgewiesen
Dörfer zwischen 1300 und 1625 haben wir auch die Namen der Personen im
Sicht genommen, die diese Papiere damals vorgebracht haben. Die meisten
Oyconymen sind mit dem
Sufix
-
esti
abgeleitet, das typisch für die
Hauptnamen ist. Die Meinungen der Forscher
Al. Graur
und
I.
Patrut teilen wir
auch: "Die Namen der Dörfer tragen meistens den Namen des Gründers,
gefolgt von
Sufix
-
esti".
Unsere Analyse zeigt,
dass ca.
40% aus den Namen der Orten mit dem
Sufix
-esti
aufgebaut sind. Ein Paar Personennamen sind sogar mit einem
Jahrhundert bevor dem Ortsnamen erschienen, so wie die wissenschatfliche
Dokumentation zeigt. Der richtig argumentierten Meinung von
Al. Graur
stimmen wir wieder zu. Ein großer Teil der Namen sind heutzutage nicht mehr
benutzt, aber weil diese einmal existiert haben, müssen wir unsere
toponymische Forschung mit der antroponymisehen Forschung verbinden.
Ca. 20% von den Oyconymen sind aus anderen Toponymen oder Antropo-
nymen entstanden, die mit
Sufix
-eni
(-ani)
abgeleitet wurden, während die
anderen
Sufixe
eine kleinere Bedeutung für das System der toponymischen
Ableitung haben.

Demnach haben wir die abgeleiteten und nicht abgeleiteten Toponymen,
die in anderen Kreisen der Walachei zur selben Zeit nachgewiesen wurden, um
die Struktur der
Toponymie
von Arges besser zu kennen.
In dem sechsten Kapitel, Struktur der Toponymen im Arges. Aufbau der
Toponymen, sind die vor Ort gesammelten Toponyme analysiert und
strukturiert als Nummer der Teile, die sie auftauen. So haben wir zwei
grosse
Kategorien der toponymischen Struktur unterscheidet: einfache Toponyme und
analytische Toponyme.
Das siebte Kapitel, Das Toponym Arges. Geschichte und Etymologie,
behandelt sich mit der Schlussfolgerung,
dass
in der mitelalterlichen
Dokumentation der alte Name Arges als Toponym oder Hydronym in
Siebenbürgen, Walachei und Moldau nachgewiesen wurde. Die Etymologie
dieses Wort wurde lange Zeit verhandelt, die meisten Linguisten und Historiker
haben es mit dem alten Argessis oder Argissis verbindet. Aus diesem Wort
stammt der heutzutage Arges aus.
Das Kapitel Das Toponym
Măţău.
Herkunft und Bedeutung ist eine
detailierte Analyse dieses Toponyms mit dem Hilfe der gerundeten
Dokumentation. Wir haben bemerkt, dieses dauert seit dem 16. Jahrhundert her,
aber einige Beweise zeigen,
dass
dieses zur Zeit von Vlad
Tepes
existierte.
Linguisten wie N.
Draganu,
С.
Diculescu, St.
Pasca, Sextil
Puscariu und
Historiker N. Constantinescu waren sehr interessiert in der Etymologie dieses
Wortes. N.
Draganu
formulierte die Voraussetzung,
dass
Măţău
eine
Slavische
Herkunft hat, nachdem die Rumänen das Wort von den Ungarn übernommen
haben, und bedeutete "Dorf des Bares". Das klingt ziemlich einleuchtend, weil
Sextil Puscariu das Toponym in Region Pind entdeckt hat.
Als Voraussetzung für die Analysierung und Strukturierung der
Toponymie
von Arges ist dieses Werk nicht zinspflichtig den anderen schon
erschienen Werken, denn für die tausendjährige Existenz des Kreises Arges ist
es wichtiger die archäologischen Forschungen und die uralte Dokumentation
bekannt zu machen, die die ersten Namen der Orten im Kreis Arges
nachweisen.
Als Konklusion hoffen wir,
dass
unseres Bemühen einen Anfang für ein
weitere und detailierte Forschung der
Toponymie
von Arges bedeutet, um neue
Elemente der
Toponymie
zu entdecken und verschiedene Interpretationen
aufzusetzen.

or anthroponyms with the suffix -eni
{-ani),
whereas the other suffixes have a
much lower share in the derivational toponymy system.
As such, I followed the derivative and non-derivative homophonic topo¬
nyms certified in other counties from Wallachia during the same period, in
order to know the structure of
Argeş
toponymy.

Toponyms. Formation of
Toponyms, we analyzed the toponyms collected in the field and organized

(structured) them accoding to the number of elements involved in their
formation, distinguishing two main categories of
toponymie
structures: simple
and analytical ioponyms.
In the the Vllth chapter,
Argeş
Toponym. History and Etymology, after the
undertaken research, we found that the old name
Argeş
was first certified in the
medieval documents as a toponym or hydronym in Transylvania, Wallachia and
Moldavia. The etymology of this word has been very much debated for more
than a century, most linguists and historians connecting it with the ancient
Thracian Argessis or Argissis. From the ancient Thracian form,
Argeş
derives
nowadays.
In the chapter
Măţău
Toponym. Origin and Significance, we undertook a
thorough analysis of it, based on existing documents. I found that it appeared in
the XVI-th century, but some evidence shows that it would have existed ever
since Vlad
Tepes
time. Linguists such as,
N.
Dräganu, C.
Diculescu,
Şt.
Pasca,
Sextil
Puşcariu
and the historian
N.
Constantinescu, were very interested in the
etimology of the respective word.
N.
Drăganu's
hypothesis according to which
the word is of Slavic origin, after having been assimilated by Romanians
through a Hungarian branch, with the meaning of "a village of a bear", seems
plausible to us, the name of the toponym
Meţova
being identified by Sextil
Puşcariu
with the Romanians of Pind.
As a working hypothesis, in analyzing and structuring the toponymy in
Argeş,
this paper is not tributary to other similar ones, because
Argeş
has its
ancient millenary existence and it was necessary both to point out the results of
archaeological research done in this region in the last century and to emphasize
the documents where the first
Argeş
names were certified.
Therefore, we express our conviction that, our attempt should represent a
stimulus for further research in the toponymy in
Arges,
which will highlight
new elements and aspects, which added to our analysis and results should bring
additional items, and even add
-
there wherever possible
-
also other points of
view.

Das Buch,
Satele argeşene atestate între
1300
şi
1625.
Istorie şi etimologie,
ist das Ergebnis eingehender Forschungen, wo wir sowhohl historische als auch
geographische Informationen analysiert haben und eine persönliche
Dokumentation vor Ort vorgenommen , um die genaue offiziellen Formen der
Toponymen zu erkennen und die Bezeichnungen der geographischen Gebieten
und der Ortschaften des Arges Bezirkes zu selektieren. Diese umfangreiche
Forschung entstand aus dem Wunsch viele von den verschiedenen Bedeutungen
der Ortsnamen im Arges Bezirk zu erklären und zu argumentieren.
Die durchgeführte Analyse und die Untersuchung, die den Ortsnamen
gewidmet sind, hat uns erlaubt, die unaussprechliche Wert dieser Fragmente
der Sprache zu bemerken. Mit den gesammelten und von uns erklärten
Informationen versuchen wir, die häufigen Fragen über die
Toponymie
der
Arges Bezirk zu beantworten.
Im Allgemeinem haben die Untersuchungen in dem Gebiet der
Toponymie
gezeigt, wie wichtig und vielfaltig eine Analyse und Interpretation der
Ortsnamen sind.
In den meisten Fällen haben die Forscher (Historiker, Linguisten,
Geogrpahiker) all diese bemerkt und jeder hat seine Meinung formuliert, so daß
wir heute verschiedene Bedeutungen und Interpretationen der
Historik
der
Toponymie
haben.

In dem ersten Kapitel, Die
Historik
der Untersuchungen in dem Gebiet der
Toponymie
betitelt, haben wir die wichtigsten rumänischen Linguisten,
Historiker und Geographiker seit dem zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrunderts bis
heutzutage präsentiert und ihre Arbeiten und Beiträge an die Struktur und
Herkunft der rumänischen Ortsnamen.
Die nächsten Kapitel (Kapitel 2,3,4 und 5) fassen eine Analyse der
Ortsnamen im Kreis Arges zusammen. Diese sind als Oyconyme bekannt und
wurden zwischen 1300-1625 bestätigt. Wir haben uns mit den meisten
Toponymen beschäftigt, die Theorie verschiedener linguistischen Spezialiste
präsentiert und unsere eigene Schlussfolgerung ausgedruckt, die nicht immer
die gleiche mit den schon formulierten ist.
Erstens haben wir uns über die graphische Form der Dörfer aus den alten
historischen Manuskripten dokumentiert, und die phonetische Entwicklung
einiger toponymischen Namen studiert. Als Schlussfolgerung haben wir
gezeigt,
dass
die Oyconyme ihre erste Form aufbewahrt haben. Das ¡st ein
Nachweis für ihre Entstehung lang bevor ihrer Hinterlegung in den
linguistischen Werke. Diese waren sehr bekannt und familiär im Katalog der
geographischen Namen aus mitelalterlicher Walachei.
Bei der Forschung der Dokumenten über die Namen der nachgewiesen
Dörfer zwischen 1300 und 1625 haben wir auch die Namen der Personen im
Sicht genommen, die diese Papiere damals vorgebracht haben. Die meisten
Oyconymen sind mit dem
Sufix
-
esti
abgeleitet, das typisch für die
Hauptnamen ist. Die Meinungen der Forscher
Al. Graur
und
I.
Patrut teilen wir
auch: "Die Namen der Dörfer tragen meistens den Namen des Gründers,
gefolgt von
Sufix
-
esti".
Unsere Analyse zeigt,
dass ca.
40% aus den Namen der Orten mit dem
Sufix
-esti
aufgebaut sind. Ein Paar Personennamen sind sogar mit einem
Jahrhundert bevor dem Ortsnamen erschienen, so wie die wissenschatfliche
Dokumentation zeigt. Der richtig argumentierten Meinung von
Al. Graur
stimmen wir wieder zu. Ein großer Teil der Namen sind heutzutage nicht mehr
benutzt, aber weil diese einmal existiert haben, müssen wir unsere
toponymische Forschung mit der antroponymisehen Forschung verbinden.
Ca. 20% von den Oyconymen sind aus anderen Toponymen oder Antropo-
nymen entstanden, die mit
Sufix
-eni
(-ani)
abgeleitet wurden, während die
anderen
Sufixe
eine kleinere Bedeutung für das System der toponymischen
Ableitung haben.

Demnach haben wir die abgeleiteten und nicht abgeleiteten Toponymen,
die in anderen Kreisen der Walachei zur selben Zeit nachgewiesen wurden, um
die Struktur der
Toponymie
von Arges besser zu kennen.
In dem sechsten Kapitel, Struktur der Toponymen im Arges. Aufbau der
Toponymen, sind die vor Ort gesammelten Toponyme analysiert und
strukturiert als Nummer der Teile, die sie auftauen. So haben wir zwei
grosse
Kategorien der toponymischen Struktur unterscheidet: einfache Toponyme und
analytische Toponyme.
Das siebte Kapitel, Das Toponym Arges. Geschichte und Etymologie,
behandelt sich mit der Schlussfolgerung,
dass
in der mitelalterlichen
Dokumentation der alte Name Arges als Toponym oder Hydronym in
Siebenbürgen, Walachei und Moldau nachgewiesen wurde. Die Etymologie
dieses Wort wurde lange Zeit verhandelt, die meisten Linguisten und Historiker
haben es mit dem alten Argessis oder Argissis verbindet. Aus diesem Wort
stammt der heutzutage Arges aus.
Das Kapitel Das Toponym
Măţău.
Herkunft und Bedeutung ist eine
detailierte Analyse dieses Toponyms mit dem Hilfe der gerundeten
Dokumentation. Wir haben bemerkt, dieses dauert seit dem 16. Jahrhundert her,
aber einige Beweise zeigen,
dass
dieses zur Zeit von Vlad
Tepes
existierte.
Linguisten wie N.
Draganu,
С.
Diculescu, St.
Pasca, Sextil
Puscariu und
Historiker N. Constantinescu waren sehr interessiert in der Etymologie dieses
Wortes. N.
Draganu
formulierte die Voraussetzung,
dass
Măţău
eine
Slavische
Herkunft hat, nachdem die Rumänen das Wort von den Ungarn übernommen
haben, und bedeutete "Dorf des Bares". Das klingt ziemlich einleuchtend, weil
Sextil Puscariu das Toponym in Region Pind entdeckt hat.
Als Voraussetzung für die Analysierung und Strukturierung der
Toponymie
von Arges ist dieses Werk nicht zinspflichtig den anderen schon
erschienen Werken, denn für die tausendjährige Existenz des Kreises Arges ist
es wichtiger die archäologischen Forschungen und die uralte Dokumentation
bekannt zu machen, die die ersten Namen der Orten im Kreis Arges
nachweisen.
Als Konklusion hoffen wir,
dass
unseres Bemühen einen Anfang für ein
weitere und detailierte Forschung der
Toponymie
von Arges bedeutet, um neue
Elemente der
Toponymie
zu entdecken und verschiedene Interpretationen
aufzusetzen.
