Raphael explores and illuminates the 350-year history of Judaic life in the United States and
the diverse nature of contemporary Judaism. His work combines research into synagogue archival
records and secondary sources with interviews and observations of worship services in more than one
hundred Jewish congregations.
Raphael begins with a chapter on the variety of beliefs, practices, festivals, and life-cycle events in both
traditional and
nontraditional
Jewish communities. He then traces Jewish history in America, from the
arrival of the first Jews in the colonial era to the present, highlighting the emergence and development
of the four branches: Orthodox, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Reform. Addressing a variety
of social and theological issues, Raphael considers controversies relating to spirituality, conversion,
homosexuality, Jewish education, synagogue architecture, and American Judaism s relationship
to Israel. He also discusses eight figures whose ideas and activities had a tremendous influence on
American Judaism. In the final chapter, he focuses on the return to tradition in all branches of Judaism
and examines prospects for the future.
MARC LEE RAPHAEL is the Nathan and Sophia Professor of Judaic Studies, professor of reli¬
gious studies, and chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the College of William and Mary. He
