It is as if we are standing behind the great man, looking
over his shoulder, in the heat of battle or before the
storm, sharing his emotions as he dashes off reports to
friends and patrons, instructions to colleagues, warm
messages to Emma.
There is no substitute for Nelson s letters in
revealing his heart and mind. In Colin White s
engrossing commentary on the letters, he
underlines Nelson s extraordinary natural fluency
as a touchstone of his charismatic personality.
That there should still be letters to be added
to the corpus already in existence would seem
a miracle. It is, however, the result of a major
undertaking, the Nelson Letters Project; of the
twelve hundred or so letters gathered since
from collections worldwide (a
known correspondence), over five hundred are
published in full for the first time in this book.
The letters fall into four groups: private
material relating to family, friends and professional
colleagues, both new and suppressed from
earlier editions; secret material, not recorded
in the official letter-books; personal orders to
his captains, often in previously ignored scruffy
working books; and some single letters or small
groups located in archives not hitherto explored.
Taken together, they reveal Nelson afresh
as near to autobiography as it is possible to get.
Additional detail on all the formative events of
his life (great moments and lesser) brings the man
clearly before the reader. He stands revealed in
his complex entirely, endlessly fascinating and
curiously compulsive, naval genius and passionate
heart.
