PILOT
FROM A LEGEND
It was June
20, 1937
at
4:20
p.m.
that gave the world the news of
Soviet pilot
Valéry
Chkalov and his
crew, co-pilot Georgy Baydukov and
flight navigator Alexander Belyakov. A
nonstop flight from Moscow via the
North Pole to America was over at that
exact time. A red-winged «ANT-25»
plane finished taxiing on a Vancouver
runway, Washington.
A huge crowd hailed the audacious
pilots.
Newspapers would quote from
Chkalov s interview:
«Flying from Moscow across the
North Pole to your grand country, we have
brought on our plane wings friendly
greetings to the people of the United
States from one hundred seventy million
citizens of our country».
President Franklin Roosevelt highly
appreciated the feat of Chkalov s crew.
Receiving the Soviet pilots, he said, «No
diplomacy work could have matched for a
decade what you have done for bringing
our peoples together with your flight».
The American continent retains
Chkalov s deed in its memory.
May
20, 1974
is considered the day
when the Chkalov Memorial Trans-Polar
Flight Committee was officially estab¬
lished in Vancouver,
Vancouver has a park and a street
named after Chkalov. There are several
institutions bearing his name too.
Guests from the remote American
city have been repeatedly welcomed in
Valéry Pavlovien
Chkalov s home town
now bearing his name. It used to be
the village of Vassilyova
Sloboda,
which stood on a bank of the Volga
River. It is on the bottom of the Gorky
water-storage reservoir today. The
house where
Valéry
Chkalov was born
and raised has been relocated onto a
hill. Nowadays the house accommo¬
dates a museum of the pilot.
Its visitors will find out that
Chkalov s father, Pavel Grigoryevich, was
a skilled boilermaker and his mother was
an ordinary peasant woman.
Valéry
Chkalov was born in
1904
to be
the last child in the family. He had two
sisters and two brothers.
Valéry
first saw an airplane over the
Volga and got sky-addicted immediately.
When he finished school, he left for
Nizhny Novgorod and found a job at an
aircraft repair depot. Sometimes pilots
took him aboard and to the sky. His
dream of flights grew stronger.
As soon as his age permitted,
Valéry
took off for a flying school. He first
underwent preparation in theory and
then mastered actual flying techniques
in airplane cockpits.
He began his military service in
Leningrad. The young pilot did not want
to fly as prescribed. He was keen on
learning more of planes performance
capabilities. He would fly underneath
the Trinity Bridge in Leningrad and make
steep turns around the main dome of the
St. Isaak Cathedral. His authorities did
not approve of such Liberties and once
put him in a military detention room as
punishment.
But everybody realized there was no
pilot to match Chkalov in the sky. The Air
Command transferred him to the Air
Force Experimental Research Institute.
That is where Chkalov s talents were
fully displayed. He would test the coun¬
try s most superior planes of the time.
The
«1-16»
fighter by designer
Polikarpov was most famous of them all.
Chkalov s aircraft would repeatedly crash
during testing but the pilot seemed to be
born under a lucky star.
The
«1-16»
fighter was a high-speed
and well-armed aircraft.
Chkalov happened to meet Josef
Stalin at one of aeronautical shows. The
Soviet leader liked this courageous pilot.
Chkalov asked his permission for a long¬
distance flight, and Stalin sanctioned the
141
venture but personally determined the
course, Chkalov was to fly to the
Kamchatka Peninsula.
That nonstop flight to the Soviet Far
East lasted
56
hours and
20
minutes. The
pilots had to avoid cyclones near the
Northern Land Archipelago and the
Okhotsky Sea and finally landed on
Udd,
a small island.
After that daring flight Chkalov,
Baydukovand Belyakovwere awarded the
golden stars of the Heroes of the Soviet
Union.
The route to America was their sec¬
ond far-reaching flight. That time they
spent
63
hours and
16
minutes in the air
and covered
9,130
km.
Pilots Georgy
ßaydukov
and
Alexander Belyakov visited the United
States once again in
1975 -
that time on
board an «IL-62» passenger jet. President
Gerald Ford wished to meet them. He said
at a reception ceremony: «We regard as
ал
Event of the Century what these peo¬
ple did in
1937».
Unfortunately, Captain
Valéry
Pavlovich Chkalov was not with his crew
on that day. He died long before in
1938
testing a new plane.
Chkalov had a world-challenging
dream of flying round the planet. But the
aeronautical engineering of that time
was not developed enough to support his
aspiration.
But it is possible today. Chkalov
remains the perfect example of a pilot for
Russian cosmonauts.
Wherever Chkalov used to live, he
always remembered his homeland and
would repeat, «My home is on the Volga».
Visit the pilot s homeland and you
will see where the man drew his love and
spirit from.
