Summary:"Mobilizing thousands of workers and forging alliances with major political parties, labor unions have played a vital role in shaping political regimes and economic development strategies for much of the twentieth century - particularly in Latin America and Europe. In the 1980s and '90s, however, as economic uncertainty, fragmented interests, and neoliberal reforms became the norm, unions and parties often developed conflicting goals. Union leaders found themselves forced to choose sides - either to remain loyal to the party by cooperating with reforms that hurt organized labor, or to resist reforms and abandon their political relationships. Katrina Burgess compares events in Spain, Venezuela, and Mexico to shed light on the strikingly different ways in which union politics have evolved, and how labor leaders have adapted in response to the challenge. She also explores the implications of those reactions for the future role of unions in politics."--BOOK JACKET.
