There is a dearth of short,
generat
works that show the Eastern Front
in its wider context. The two best
are A.J.P.Taylor s The First World
War (Hamish Hamilton) and B.H.
Liddell Hart s The War In Outline
(Fa ber).
On the German sideall the
participants (Ludendorff, Falken-
hayn, Hindenburg, etc.) wrote
memoirs or memoir forms. In¬
comparably the best —though still
somewhat coloured in places by
hindsight —are those of
Major-
General
Max Hoffmann, War Diaries
and Other Papers (two volumes,
translated by Eric Sutton,
1929).
Serious students will also find
that, in addition to the plethora
of personal reminiscence, it is
possible to verily most facts from
the German Official History,
Der Weltkrieg 1914-18
(fourteen
volumes, published in Berlin
between
1925
and
1944).
On the Russian side there is
General Nicholas N.Golovine s
The Russian Campaign of
1914
(translated by
A.C.
S.Muntz,
1933).
Golovine includes a number of
official battle
reportsas,
for
instance, from Generals
Martos
and Potovsky. He also wrote a
general history, The Russian Army
in the First World War (Carnegie
Endowment). General Basil

Memories and
Impressions
of War
and Revolution (New York,
1919).
Two foreigners inside Russia
have given their accounts of
events there: Major-General Sir
Alfred Knox in his book With the
Russian Army (two volumes,

French ambassador to St Peters¬
burg, in An Ambassador s Memoirs
(three volumes, translated by
F.A.Holt,
Hutchinson).
