THE AGRARIAN MOVEMENT IN BULGARIA,
1899-191Ş
This dissertation deals with the origin and development
of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union in the years before
it came to power. The first chapter examinee Bulgarian poll*
tical,
economic, and social conditions in the last
decade
of
the nineteenth century. To a significant portion of Bul¬
garia's intelligentsia, particularly the public-school

teachers, it was apparent that the country had not
nadé
the
progress that was expected at the time of the liberation.
This realization
led ţo
the spread of populist and socialist
doctrines and to the growth of the trade-union movement, all
of which played a role in the early agrarian movement«
Chapter two turns to the founding of the Agrarian Union
as an "educational-economic" organization. Although the
Agrarian leaders originally intended to remain aloof fro»
polities» they found It impossible to follow this course«
After sharp disputes that seriously divided the Union, the
majority decided to enter
