This book, which is the only compre-
hensive work dealing with one of the
most enigmatic contemporary literary
figures, has been specially commis-
sioned to coincide with Somerset
Maugham’s 85th birthday. For more
than sixty years he has given pleasure
to millions of readers throughout the
world. Duiing this time he has learned
to discount both praise and criticism;
in the preface which he has specially
written for this book he reveals the
reasons for this attitude.
St. John Irvine discusses Maugham the
playwright; Frank Swinnerton traces
the outline of his literary career. Dr.
M. G. Kuner examines his general
development as a novelist, whilst Dr.
Klaus Jonas has concentrated on the
short stories and novels with a Far
Eastern background. Dr. Jonas, who
is the compiler of the Maugham Biblio-
graphy, has edited the anthology and
has contributed a biographical study
as well as a note on the Maugham
Collections. Glenwav Wescott sums up
Maugham’s position in literature.
Mr. Maugham himself has been most
helpful in providing information and
replying to queries. |
