Reuben Ainsztein fled his native Poland for Belgium, then in 1940 he tried to reach London, eventually walking over the Pyrenees and spending over a year in a Spanish concentration camp. Ainsztein finally reached Britain and joined the RAF as a turret gunner on a Lancaster bomber.
