AN AUSTRALIAN GIRL
Catherine Martin was born Catherine Mackay in
Isle of Skye and migrated to South Australia, still in its first decades
as a colony, in
as a clerk, she wrote a wide range of fiction, poetry, and essays, pub¬
lishing her work sometimes under pseudonyms or anonymously.
She married Frederick Martin, an accountant, in
best-known novel, An Australian Girl, reflects the passionate com¬
mitment Catherine Martin felt to her adopted country as it moved
from the status of Britain s interlinked colonies towards nationhood.
In later years Catherine Martin revisited her native Scotland and
spent long periods in Europe, but always returned to South Aus¬
tralia, where she died in
Graham Tulloch is Professor of English at the Flinders Uni¬
versity of South Australia. He has edited Scott s Ivanhoe and, for
Oxford World s Qassics, Clarke s His Natural Life, and he writes on
the Scots language and Scottish literature.
Amanda Nettelbeck is a lecturer in English at the University
of Adelaide in South Australia. She is the author of Reading David
Malouf, editor or co-editor of three books of essays on Australian
writing, and has a particular interest in South Australian literary
history.
Catherine
An Australian girl
Edited by Graham Tulloch with an Introduction by Amanda Nettelbeck
We must have a country of our own, governed by ourselves, and not
have the name of being ruled by fellows sent out of the heart of London.
Stella Courtland s transformation from an independent girl with a
passion for the writings of Goethe, Heine, and Kant, to a married woman,
hemmed in by social constraints, is the subject of Catherine Martin s
novel of
the novel is also steeped in questions of Australian identity. Martin not
only satirizes and scrutinizes colonial hierarchies, but she also anticipates
Australia s nationhood and the values of a new generation.
A journalist and essayist as well as a novelist, Catherine Martin was
fascinated by the question of what Australianness might be at a time
when Australia was breaking away from its status as a British colony, and,
through the story of Stella s painful growth to maturity, she paints a vivid
picture of this turning-point in Australian history.
