FOREWORD
This publication is meant to contribute to a better knowledge of the Byzantine
wall-paintings of Crete and, as will become clear, of Byzantine art in general
and, in particular, of its iconography. It was accomplished thanks to the moral,
financial and practical support of several individuals and institutions, to which I
gladly express my gratitude here. First of all, I am greatly indebted to the
reverend Bishop of Rethymnon and Aulopotamos, Anthimos Syrianos. He
showed a great interest in this study and helped me in various ways, following
in the footsteps of his predecessors, the late Theodoros Tzedakis and Titos
Syligardakis. I am grateful to the University of Leiden and the University of
Crete for giving me the opportunity to do this research. The Netherlands
Organisation for Research financed one of my several expeditions to Crete. The
Ephoria of Byzantine Antiquities in Herakleion and that in Rethymnon must be
mentioned here for their efforts in preserving the Byzantine heritage on Crete. I
