This volume makes a very important and timely contribution to the rapidly
growing literature on Creoles and language contact. Its great strength lies in
the rich grammatical data it provides on
18
languages. All major European
lexifiers are represented (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch) as
well as Arabic and Assamese. The data are presented in a standardized
descriptive format, allowing real and logical comparisons.
At last we have a book which shows, virtually at a glance, similarities
and differences among a carefully chosen selection of Creoles. This also
facilitates comparison with other contact languages of different lexical bases
as well as with relevant African languages. The implications for hypotheses
of genesis and for other critical issues in Creole linguistics are striking and
highly significant.
