Autor: Fielding, Gordon J.
Jahr: 1974
CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION:
Theory of programmed learning and the link between
text and the programmed manual.
UNIT 1: FARMER JOHN
The concept of locational rent or the additional price
an activity is willing to pay for the use of the land
of superior location. The student is introduced to
the economic process as a determinant of the geographic
distributions.
UNIT 2: ANALYSIS OF AREAS USING A TOPOGRAPHIC MAP
The interpretation of a topographic map. The student
is introduced to the map as a technique for studying
spatial distributions and the human processes which
create distributions.
UNIT 3: ANALYSIS OF AREAS FROM AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS
Aerial photographs allow the student to detect regu-
larity in urban land use and to speculate as to the
behavioral processes which create the regularity in
spatial distributions
UNIT 4: DISTANCE AND HUMAN BEHAVIOR
Relationship between distance and absenteeism is
examined. Scatter diagrams and regression are intro-
duced .
UNIT 5: SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF GAS STATIONS
An introduction to the use of census information for
the testing of a locational hypothesis. Several
plausible hypotheses are tested by simple correlation
analysis.
UNIT 6: FARM
The interpretation of agricultural land use patterns
as generated by the computer. The student observes
the results of manipulating the variables of the
von Thimen model. When the problem is simplified
by assumptions a formal model of the behavioral
processes can be stated.

UNIT 7: CENTRAL PLACES 205
Summarizes the basic premises of the economic process
as applied to the location of tertiary activities.
UNIT 8: DIFFUSION AS A SOCIAL PROCESS 227
Studies the effect of social processes upon inter-
action. Information dispersal in a heterogeneous
population is viewed from a cultural and social stand-
point. Unit requires interpretation of computer maps.
UNIT 9: POLITICAL PROCESS 257
Identifies the political process as one of the behav-
ioral processes that geographers must consider if they
are to develop meaningful generalizations about the
location and arrangement of human activities and
facilities. Resolution of conflict generated by a
proposal to construct a freeway is used to illustrate
the different interest groups involved in the deci-
sion.
