The political and academic appropriation of the term "queer" in recent
years has marked a shift in the study of sexuality from a focus on
supposedly essential categories
—
such as "gay" and "lesbian", and more
recently "bisexual,"»
—
to more fluid or "queer" notions of sexual identity.
This change in focus, crystallized under the rubric of "queer theory," has
profoundly affected how scholars and students theorize about notions of
gender and sexuality. And yet too often queer theory has been represented
as though it had no history, no antecedents, no progenitors, no sources.
