During the Korean war, his task force (Drysdale) was ambushed at Korea's infamous Chosin Reservoir, where he and several hundred American and British soldiers were taken prisoner. He spent six months in various Chinese POW camps (including Kanggye). He was one of eighteen Marines who participated in the only successful organized escape from a Chinese Communist POW camp.
