The authors describe their method of analyzing the peri oral aesthetic unit,
which is based on the underlying anatomy. A novel method of classifying
the lip cheek or melolabial groove is outlined, with practical implications
for the treatment of this area.
Effacement of the Deep Lip Cheek Groove with Gore Tex 7
John N. Harlock and David A. F. Ellis
The problem presented by the deep lip cheek or nasolabial groove has been
approached in several different ways. Gore Tex effacement, by one of the
two different techniques described, provides a simple solution when more
extensive techniques are neither indicated nor appropriate.
Anatomically Designed Silastic Implants for the Melolabial Groove 13
Harry Mittelman
The melolabial groove and crease have been a challenge to the facial plastic
surgeon. The anatomy in this area is variable and needs to be understood
well. The ability to augment this sulcus with variable sizes of computer
aided designed, Silastic nasolabial implants has proven to be very helpful in
diminishing the depth of this concavity while providing a more aesthetically
pleasing transition between the lip and cheek area. The procedure is exacting
but quick, easy, changeable, and reversible.
Deep Plane Face Lift for Improvement of the Lateral Oral Groove 23

Although there is no face lifting technique that consistently and completely
corrects deep nasolabial grooves, the deep plane rhytidectomy is well suited

for handling this difficult problem. The deep plane rytidectomy technique,
as it specifically relates to the nasolabial groove, is described. The discussion
emphasizes theoretical and practical points to consider.

This article describes the author s experience with the use of the endoscope
in selective rejuvenation of the midface. The approach described can be
used in conjunction with an endoscopic subperiosteal brow lift with or
without a face lift.
Excision of the Nasolabial Fold 43

The prominent nasolabial fold is a challenging problem to correct. A tech¬
nique that takes the anatomical problem of the area into account is described.
With the use of this technique, the author has found a solution that corrects
the nasolabial fold in a very satisfactory way for both the surgeon and
the patient.
Carbon Dioxide Laser Resurfacing of the Upper Lip 47

Advances in laser technology have allowed the char free carbon dioxide
laser to be used increasingly for the resurfacing of photodamaged skin. The
authors detail the causes of upper lip wrinkling and present a photonumeric
scale for grading upper lip wrinkling. By using the technique outlined, an
effective treatment with predictable outcome and acceptable morbidity can
be offered to patients.
Red Lip Reduction: Reduction Cheiloplasty 55

Red lip reduction (reduction cheiloplasty) is an often overlooked adjunctive
procedure to the nonwhite rhinoplasty patient. It is performed easily and
the results are consistently good. Reduction cheiloplasty enhances the over¬
all facial harmony when used appropriately, and it should be discussed
with selected rhinoplasty patients.
Red Lip Augmentation Using Fat Injections 61
Michael M. Churukian
Autologous fat for soft tissue augmentation has been established as a gener¬
ally popular and scientifically rational procedure. Nonetheless, the specific
question of efficacy persists regarding the lips. Because of the inherent
limitations of autologous fat transplantation and the unique characteristics
of the lips, relatively more treatments are necessary here than in other facial
locations. Likewise, the customary sequelae of fat injection tend to be more
persistent in the lips.

Red lip augmentation through the use of the lip roll procedure is an inviting
method for enlarging the lips. The author s experience with 20 consecutive
cases has led to mixed results, and his experience with this technique is
presented for those surgeons who are interested in lip enhancement.
