Zusammenfassung: | This study explores the Stuart history play, a genre often viewed as an inferior or degenerate version of the exemplary Elizabethan dramatic form. Writing in the shadow of Marlowe and Shakespeare, Stuart playwrights have traditionally been evaluated through the aesthetic assumptions and political concerns of the sixteenth century. Ivo Kamps's study traces the development of Jacobean drama in the radically changed literary and political environment of the seventeenth century. He shows how historiographical developments in this period materially affected the structure of the history play. As audiences became increasingly skeptical of the comparatively simple teleological narratives of the Tudor era, a demand for new ways of staging history emerged. Kamps demonstrates how Stuart drama capitalized on this new awareness of historical narrative to undermine inherited forms of literary and political authority Historiography and ideology in Stuart drama is the first sustained attempt to account for a neglected genre, and a sophisticated reading of the relationship between literature, history, and political power |

Press 1996 XIV, 255 S. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Teilw. zugl.: Princeton, Univ., Diss. This study explores the Stuart history play, a genre often viewed as an inferior or degenerate version of the exemplary Elizabethan dramatic form. Kamps demonstrates how Stuart drama capitalized on this new awareness of historical narrative to undermine inherited forms of literary and political authority Historiography and ideology in Stuart drama is the first sustained attempt to account for a neglected genre, and a sophisticated reading of the relationship between literature, history, and political power Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1603-1642 gnd rswk-swf Engels gtt Geschiedschrijving gtt Historiographie - Grande-Bretagne - Histoire - 17e siècle Historisch drama gtt Littérature et histoire - Grande-Bretagne - Histoire - 17e siècle Politiek gtt Politique et littérature - Grande-Bretagne - Histoire - 17e siècle Théâtre anglais - 17e siècle - Histoire et critique Théâtre historique anglais - Histoire et critique Théâtre politique anglais - Histoire et critique Englisch Geschichte Geschichtsschreibung Politik English drama 17th century History and criticism Historical drama, English History and criticism Historiography Great Britain History 17th century Literature and history Great Britain History 17th century Political plays, English History and criticism Politics and literature Great Britain History 17th century Geschichtsschreibung (DE-588)4020531-9 gnd rswk-swf Historisches Drama (DE-588)4025133-0 gnd rswk-swf Ideologie (DE-588)4026486-5 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Drama (DE-588)4012899-4 gnd rswk-swf Grande-Bretagne - Historiographie Grande-Bretagne - Politique et gouvernement - 1603-1714 Großbritannien Great Britain Historiography Great Britain Politics and government 1603-1714 (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Drama (DE-588)4012899-4 s Geschichte 1603-1642 z DE-604 Historisches Drama (DE-588)4025133-0 s Geschichtsschreibung (DE-588)4020531-9 s Ideologie (DE-588)4026486-5 s Digitalisierung UB Regensburg application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=007490594&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
