ceania comprises three great cultural areas: Melanesia, Polynesia anti Micronesia. The art of the island populations of the South Pacific takes such dit erse fonus as masks and jewelry, household utensils and weapons, canoe prows and ovennodeled skulls, tapa and major representations of the deities. It is spawned from the religious beliefs of people attempting to answer the great questions of their t en existence. Volume I opens with an introduction to the physical and historical situation of the South Pacific island cultures from the first known migrations, which began some 60 000 sears ago. to the period of European discovery and exploration on through to today. This is followed by the first of three sections devoted to each cultural area of Oceania, Melanesia, which begins bv focusing on the extraordinary art forms of New Guinea. Volume 11 continues with the »expressionistic« art of the rest of Melanesia, the highly classical art forms of Polynesia and the power and pure form of Micronesian works of art. Oceanic Art has long been hidden away in museums devoted to the scientific studs of man. »Rediscovered« in the early years of this century , it is now finally being regarded as a major component of the world s artistic heritage. Most of the works of art illustrated in these two volumes are stored deep in the reseñ es of museums or held in private collections not accessible to the public. The majority are shown here for the first time and were photographed specifically for this book. O zeanien umfaßt drei große Kulturgebiete: Melanesien, Polynesien und Mikronesien. Die
Kunst der Inselbewoh ner im Südpazifik nimmt ganz unterschiedliche Formen an. Sie zeigt sich in Masken und Schmuck. I laushaltsgegen ständen und Waffen, Kanus und nach modellierten Schädeln, Rindenbaststoffen und Darstellungen von Gottheiten und ist Ergebnis der religiösen Glaubensvorstellungen der Menschen und ihrer immerwährenden Suche nach dem Sinn des Lebens. Band 1 beginnt mit einer Einführung in die geographische Lage und die Geschichte der Inselkulturen im Südpazifik. Sie führt von den ersten bekannten Völkerw anderungen vor rund 60 000 Jahren über die Zeit der Entdeckungen und Forschungsreisen der Europäer bis in die Gegenwart. Nach die ser Einführung wird zunächst Melanesien mit den außerordent lichen Kunstformen von Neuguinea vorgestellt. Band II be schreibt die »expressionistische« Kunst des übrigen Melanesiens, den ausgesprochen klassischen Kunstformen Polynesiens und schließlich die Kraft und reinen Formen, die niikronesischen Kunstwerken innewohnt. Ozeanische Kunst war lange Zeit nur in anthropologischen Museen zu sehen, »Neu entdeckt« zu Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts gilt sie heute endlich als ein wichtiger Bestandteil des künstleri schen Erbes der Veit. Der Großteil derin diesen beiden Bänden abgebildeten Kunstwerke versteckt sich noch immer tief in den Depots von Museen, oder aber sie befinden sich in Frivatsamnilungen, die der Öffentlichkeit unzugänglich sind. Die meisten davon werden hier zum ersten Mal vorgestellt und wurden speziell für dieses Buch aufgenommen. O
