Summary:Abstract: "Within Japan's Fifth Generation Computer Systems Project, a knowledge base machine named Mu-X is being developed. Although the term 'knowledge base' seems to have various meanings, Mu-X is designed as an advanced database machine with the features typical to the fifth generation computer systems. This paper shows the design considerations of the system architecture, especially of the management software on the parallel architecture. Mu-X is designed as a software-oriented multiprocessor system with hybrid shared memory systems. The management software aims at (1) effective use of the hardware architecture, (2) minimizing software overhead, and (3) parallel processing for high throughput. These design principles are reflected to the actual implementation and a good system performance is expected in a multitransaction environment."
