Grapes in the Desert
by Goran Eidevali
In the inhospitable desert, grapes are growing. The shepherd, YHWH, suddenly be-
comes like a lion and turns against his flock, the people of Israel, to destroy them.
However, the deity is also a parent, a farmer, an evergreen tree...
The textual world of Hosea 4-14 is filled with exciting metaphors. This study repre-
sents a new exegetical approach, informed by modem metaphor theory. By means of
a thorough contextual and intertextual analysis, the unique perspective offered by each
metaphor and simile in the text is elucidated. In addition, attempts are made to trace
the influence of underlying models.
For the first time, the oracular discourse found in the latter part of the book of Hosea
is interpreted as a coherent literary composition. A number of themes are identified.
These themes are shown to create continuity, as well as dynamics, within the dis-
course. The concluding part of this study discusses various aspects of the textual
world of Hosea 4—14, including:
« Personification and victimization as modes of representation
• Hierarchy vs. reciprocity in the deity-people relationship
• The polemical power of theological models
• The sacrificial system as a matrix for the metaphors in the discourse
• Transformations of the “disappearing deity” pattern

This study represents a new exegetical approach, informed by modern metaphor theory. By means of a thorough contextual and intertextual analysis, the unique perspective offered by each metaphor and simile in the text is elucidated. In addition, attempts are made to trace the influence of underlying models. For the first time, the oracular discourse found in the latter part of the book of Hosea is interpreted as a coherent literary composition. A number of themes are identified. These themes are shown to create continuity, as well as dynamics, within the discourse. The concluding part of this study discusses various aspects of the textual world of Hosea 4-14. Bible. O.T.
