Summary:Abstract: "Packaging constraints, such as package pinouts and system wiring, have major impacts on the construction and performance of large multiprocessor networks. Packaging imposes a physical hierarchy on a multiprocessor system. We examine ways to exploit this hierarchy by grouping processors into clusters. We combine previous analyses on clustering and wiring constraints to compare the effects of packaging on the performance of hierarchical and non-hierarchical system organizations, focusing on clustered and flat hypercubes. We find that clusters have better performance than previously predicted
Under uniform traffic, clustered hypercubes have lower saturation loads than unclustered hypercubes, but substantially better queueing performance prior to saturation. If a significant proportion of traffic is directed to processors within the same cluster, clustered systems have comparable saturation loads and superior queueing performance. Depending on the expected operating environments, clustering is an attractive option when packaging constraints are considered.
