Summary:Abstract: "The runtime of scientific codes is often dominated by a small number of inner loops. While tools exist to gather performance data at the program or subroutine level, few examine loop-level performance. We have developed a tool that simulates the execution of Fortran loops on the CRAY Y-MP. The tool provides fine-grained performance data about individual functional units, registers, hold issue conditions, and memory ports. This data facilitates new loop metrics such as functional unit and memory parallelism. Graphical Pictures of Performance can also be generated. The tool can be applied to a variety of areas; a sample application shows how it can be used to identify opportunities for improved scheduling of compiler-generated instructions."
