Factors affecting the breeding and population dynamics of five hole-nesting
passerines at the latitudinal a id altitudinal limit of the ranges of the species
was studied in NW Finnish L apland (69°03 N, 20°50 E) using data from 16
years
The following aspects were studied: (1) Status, densities and fluctuations,
(2) recovery rate, (3) habitat selection, (4) timing of breeding, (5) egg size, (6)
clutch size, (7) weight and wing length of females, (8) hatching and fledging
success, (9) effects of weathe: and plant phenology on reproductive traits,
(10) geographical variation i:i reproductive traits and (11) species-specific
differences in breeding strategies The most important local factor in the far
north was cold weather, which in a density-independent way acted on diffe
rent stages of the breeding cycle of the birds reducing adult survival, breeding
success and population size
