Zusammenfassung:Abstract: "The increasing diversity in the types of computer hardware and software in many computing environments creates problems in designing and implementing distributed applications. Designers of applications need conceptual frameworks to organize complex distributed systems, which combine old applications with newly created programs. End-users and programmers face the task of learning the details of diverse systems, and making the systems cooperate on solutions to problems. They need help in facing the complexities of heterogeneous environments so that they can more easily make use of these
This paper presents an overview of the AHTO project, which is an approach to solving many of the problems of heterogeneous environments. The AHTO project has the goal to design and implement a software layer that provides a homogeneous interface to basic computing services for users of a heterogeneous environment. The interface is homogeneous at the programming and command level. Remote services and files can be accessed through the layer, and interprocess communication operations are provided to enable programmers to create distributed applications
The richness of a heterogeneous environment is preserved since only the interface is homogeneous. All the services of the AHTO layer will be implemented using the local operating system, and all objects remain directly accessible through the local operating system. To demonstrate and validate the principles of AHTO, a prototype will be implemented for an environment formed from OS/2, UNIX, and VMS operating systems.
