Summary:Abstract: "This paper describes a system structuring paradigm in which 'templates' encapsulate techniques to create particular properties such as fault-tolerance. Any object can be enhanced with a property by applying the property's template. A combination of object and template, regarded as a single unit, is known as a virtual object. Templates ease the creation of services within a distributed environment by encapsulating complex virtual properties in a reusable form. Objects can then be created without regard to such complexity, since they can be enhanced later by applying the appropriate template(s)
The notion of a virtual property is illustrated by the examples of resilience, persistence and security. In each case, the property is discussed in detail and the actions of a suitable template are outlined. The resilience example is developed further to demonstrate a resilience template implementation.
