Summary:Part I, which includes most of the chapters, covers the use of confidence intervals for the presentation of research findings. In this way results are given as estimates of effects based on the study sample together with an indication of their imprecision due to sampling variation, rather than in terms of the outcomes of null hypothesis tests and P values. The rationale for preferring the estimation and confidence interval approach is described. Tables specially prepared for calculating most of the confidence intervals described in the text are given in part III.
