Summary
Results of an interdisciplinary research project are reported on. It was carried
out at the
Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde,
Koblenz, from
1977
to
1988
and and was thereafter continued by the
Landesamt für Wasserwirtschaft
Rheinland-Pfalz, Mainz,
since
1989.
Brooks
are treated as a seperate category of watercourses in respect to
hydrology, morphology and ecology. The analysis of brook typology covers
all regions of Germany including the high mountains of the Alps and the
flatlands
near the coast. The typology follows the characteristics of undistur¬
bed brooks in natural units. The different types of brooks are arranged in a
hierarchical system of brook types according to their degree of similarity.
Three general types of brooks are characterized: high mountain brooks,
mountain brooks and
flatland
brooks. The differences between these general
types are significant in every respect. For mountain brooks a more detailed
system of subtypes is developed, considering the morphology of valleys.
This leads to six sub-types of mountain brooks with significant differences
in their morphological behaviour. In a similar way a more elaborate mor¬
phological typology of high mountain brooks and
flatland
brooks may be
worked out.
The most important steps in the analysis of the eco-morphological structure
and in the prediction of the morphological development of brooks are ex¬
plained. Finally the ecological significance of the typical structures of undi¬
sturbed brooks is pointed out. |
