History of Political Thought In Germany from 1789 to 1815 Reinhold Aris When this book appeared in 1936 it was recognised as the first comprehensive and satisiactory survey of the development of German political thought for, as G. P. Gooch says in his foreword, it “has explored what to most readers is almost unknown ground.” The author’s belief that the aim of a historian should be to contribute to the better understanding of his own time led him to write not merely a study in political philosophy but a history of such political thought as actually influenced political events. Beginning with Kant, the first great German liberal, he outlines the influence of the French Revolution on every German political thinker of the Nineteenth Century. And with the development of the conception of the national state, he places at the door of Fichte, the Romantics, and especially Adam Muller, the reponsibility for initiating that line of thought in Germany which ended in National Socialism. This book is a valuable aid for those who wish to understand how the aspirations of ‘Young Germany’ evolved from the radical political thinking in Germany at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century.
