Summary:A collection of 45 articles dealing with the context of police community relations, the police role, tensions and conflicts, police-community interaction, and improvement of police community relations. The articles selected for this anthology tend to support the position that police community relations should not be treated administratively within the police department as a separate unit. Instead, it is suggested that every officer be held accountable for relating with citizens. Among the specific topics addressed in this text are definitions of police community relations, the ways in which police respond to the multitude of demands from the community, standards and goals of policing, and the ways in which the community affects police systems. Also examined are the tensions between police and other criminal justice agencies, police corruption, typical police community relations programs, and police productivity and accountability.
