This word index is based on the only edition of Lanzelet that has yet
appeared*, the text produced

this edition
has been reprinted by Walter

Gruyter with a preface by F. Norman, Berlin
I965.
The numbering of the lines in
Hahn1
s
edition contains errors and these
were not corrected in the reprint since it was produced photographically.
We could not use
Hahn
s
numbers, because some of them are used twice for
different lines (thus
5320,
б2б5,
8205, 9220).
We have therefore corrected
the line numbering and our figures refer to the corrected edition. Correction
is necessary at lines
5330 (Hahn 5320),
8575-8U
(Hahn 9575-84),
9065-9219
(Hahn 9070-922*0,

and

(Hahn
б2б5).
Most of these errors
are easily recognised in sequence (as when the

appears upside down

but special care is needed with the lines marked

Throughout
this sequence all

figures must be reduced by five.
We have supplied a cross reference when we thought it necessary or
helpful. Generally, this is when some of the instances of a word have been
displaced from the normal alphabetical order by
Ulrich s use
of an uncommon
compound or variant form. The reader is thus enabled to find occurrences of
ander
under dander,
kam
under
kan,
du
under
de,
helf under self
ь
and so on.
In most cases he is also referred to instances of a word that occur as the
second part of a compound (thus he is guided from
dar, zagen,
miieden
to
eb&nclùr,
ďietzagen,

.
We did not, however, provide cross
references to all compound words and variants or we should have crowded the
book with such information, most of it unnecessary. The user of a Middle High
German word index is well aware of proclitic and enclitic particles and will
not expect reference from
ist
to dest,
dem
to
zem,
si to dazs
,
etc. He will
know the usual spelling variants
(zêh/zêah,
etc.) and he realises that a word
may occur both under c and k (crone)
,
fff and v
(Falerîn)
,
і
and
ie
(idoah)
,
phf and pf (phant)
.
Knowing the phonetic rules, he will sometimes
consult e for
a,ä
(engestlîchen)
or
ď
for
ť
(selde). He will expect
to find contractions beside the full forms
(dienst,
gnâde, selbn as
well as
ďíenest,
genade, setben)
.
In cases like these his knowledge of the language
should enable him to find all the occurrences of a given word. But sometimes
knowledge, imagination and thoroughness cannot help him. A scholar checking
on gesinde will know there is a word ingesinde and will check it if he thinks
it relevant; but he cannot know there is an entry under nuntgesinde
,
and so
the
indexer
must guide him to it. We have allowed ourselves some discretion,
for a compound word may be so independent of its elements that no reference
is wanted: thus we refer from spit to
nîtspil but
not to Vederspil. Also, to
avoid a profusion of cross references, we have expected the user to think for
himself of the common prefixes and we have not referred, except in special
cases

to compound forms beginning with be-,
der-, durch-,
en-,
ent-,
er-,
für-,
де-,
misse-, über-,
un-, under-, ver-,
wider- and
zer-.
Our policy has
been to supply a cross reference whenever, in our judgment, the informed user

might wish to know but could not guess for himself that the variant or
compound form occurs; while not wishing to overload the index with cross
references, we have, when in doubt, preferred to supply the reference
rather than omit it.
We are indebted to Mr. Donald B. Russell, of the Science Research
Council s Atlas Computer Laboratory at Chilton, England, who devised and
ran the computer programme (codenamed COCOA)*. The text of Lanzelet

which had been punched on to computer cards, was thus converted into the
concordance from which we have made this word index. We are also much
indebted to the officers of St. David s University College, Lampeter,
Wales, who have made available the facilities for producing this work as
a book, and particularly to Mr. Meurig Griffiths, who operated the
