PREFACE
ance, the Symposium was truly international, with participants coming from
Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Switzer-
land and the United States
Time was allotted during the Symposium for informal discussions of the papers
and related investigations by the attendees These discussions were recorded on
tape and subsequently transcribed and edited lightly for brevity and clarity In
addition to these recorded discussions, numerous discussions and interactions
between attendees took place at the many social functions included in the total
Symposium format To conclude the Symposium, overall summary comments of
the proceedings were presented by one of the Symposium cochairmen
This Symposium could not have been held or these Proceedings published
without the valuable assistance of many people to whom we are greatly indebted:
Professors G L Borman, J B Heywood and W C Reynolds, Dr R B Krieger
and Dr H K Newhall for assistance in organizing the technical program and
