Preface
Although the course of study presented in this book follows logically
a first course in physics based on our earlier text Mechanics, Waves, and
Thermal Physics, any course in which mechanics and wave motion are
discussed will serve as an adequate prerequisite This text presents a
development of basic electromagnetism with applications to a wide variety
of problems in physics, astronomy, geophysics, chemistry, and biology
That is, through the examples discussed we have attempted to provide a
significant interdisciplinary flavor Many references to articles in Scientific
American, Contemporary Physics, Physics Today, and other scientific jour-
nals are included to encourage the reader to seek additional information
in areas in which he is particularly interested Rather more material is
presented than can normally be covered in any single course, thereby
allowing an instructor a considerable amount of freedom in the selection
of material for his course
The first chapter gives a brief historical resume of the development and
statement of the importance of electromagnetism
Chapters two through nine discuss the basic experimental laws of
electricity and magnetism culminating in Maxwell’s free space equations
The effects of matter on electric and magnetic fields are deliberately not
discussed in order to emphasize that the existence of these fields does not
require the presence of matter
The electric and magnetic properties of matter are treated in chapters
ten through thirteen
The interaction of electromagnetic waves and matter is considered in
chapters fourteen through twenty Some well-known classical and quantum
effects are treated in chapters fourteen and fifteen Visible light is intro-
duced as a particular example of electromagnetic waves Chapter sixteen
is devoted to a discussion of magnetic resonance, the interaction of micro-
wave and radio-frequency radiation with matter Chapters seventeen
